What is the Global Talent Stream?
Posted: Aug 23, 2021
Global Talent Stream applications are processed under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), a set of work permit streams that brings immigrants to Canada on temporary work permits to fill particular Labour requirements. GTS is the branch of the TFWP for highly-skilled workers in dedicated professions, giving priority to those having experience in engineering and tech-related fields.
The Global Talent Stream was launched in June 2017 as a two-year pilot program. The program is collectively led by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Since being introduced, thousands of skilled foreign workers have successfully reahed Canada through the GTS, with several workers supposed to arrive in the coming years.
In 2019 Federal Budget, the government announced the program will become a permanent part in Canadian immigration, giving "local businesses accelerated and knowable access to top global talent."
How does the Global Talent Stream work? - Foreign Workers
Being a foreign worker, the first thing to know is that you cannot apply directly to the Global Talent Stream. Only a Canadian employer can apply to the GTS and the foreign worker(s) they want to hire are listed on the application. That indicates that if you wish to obtain a GTS work permit, your initial objective must be to get a job offer from a Canadian employer who qualifies for the program.
There are 2 Global Talent Stream categories by means of which a Canadian employer can apply.
Category A is for employers who are referred by nominated partners of the GTS and who is hiring special and dedicated talent?
Category B is for employers hiring for positions on the Global Talent Occupations List.
In case you are a worker in hope to find a job offer that qualifies under the GTS, you must check to see if you meet the definition of "unique and specialized talent"; or if your profession falls on the Global Talent Occupations List.
If you consider that you fulfill the conditions for one of the GTS categories, then your next step is getting a job offer. Other than building your network of contacts we even recommend consulting our experts to search for positions available. The Government of Canada even operates a Job Bank Database where you may be capable of finding positions associated with the GTS.
Also, you cannot apply directly to the GTS, so after getting a job offer, your employer will have to submit an application that comprises your information. If the employer’s application is successful, they will get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). You can use this LMIA to apply for a Canadian work permit that will be processed in approximately 10 business days.
After you are approved to get a work permit, you are going to be allowed to travel to Canada and start your new job!
It must be noted that although the GTS only leads to a temporary work permit, the program is an outstanding pathway to permanent immigration to Canada. Several Canadian immigration programs need a person to have one year of Canadian work experience so as to qualify. This comprises the Canadian Experience Class of Express Entry, and a host of Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams. After you have a year of experience, chances are you will be in good position to pursue Canadian Permanent Resident Status.
Canada is in the process of welcoming over one million new immigrants between 2020 and 2022, with almost two-thirds of those immigrants coming through economic streams. In the existing immigration system, young, highly-skilled workers with Canadian experience are given priority for permanent immigration, therefore participating in GTS is a intelligent way to be established for a future in Canada.
