Denture cleaners (also known as "denture cleansers"), are over-the-counter oral care products used to clean and maintain dentures after they are removed from the mouth. Because dentures are made from materials far softer than natural teeth, they can become damaged when brushing with regular toothpaste. This is so because regular toothpaste contains abrasive elements that work well for scrubbing natural teeth but are far too abrasive for prosthetic teeth which can easily wear down. Although the proper care of dentures calls for their regular cleaning, denture wearers are advised never to use conventional toothbrushes and regular toothpaste for this. To help today's denture wearers in this regard, the oral care industry has developed a variety of commercially available denture cleansers just for this purpose.

When dentures are worn in the mouth for long periods of time a biofilm will eventually develop and interact with them. This material is in ways very similar to dental plaque which forms on natural teeth. Left untreated, dental plaque can mineralize into dental calculus which can lead to gum disease and other dental problems. The main purpose of dental cleansers is to prevent the formation of this biofilm on dentures and control the growth of micro-organisms that can find a home within the tiny pores on them. Denture cleansers are also useful in removing dark stains brought about by consuming food, beverages and tobacco use.

People have been using a mixture of water and other substances such as vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda to keep dentures clean for many generations. Today’s denture cleansers come in the form of crèmes, liquids, and solid tablets that dissolve in water. When dissolved, they create a bubbly effervescent cleaning solution. There are also powdered products that foam up when added to water. There are also mechanical methods of cleaning dentures that rely upon super-soft brushes, ultra-violet light or ultrasonic technology that polishes dentures clean.

Most types of prosthetic teeth need to be kept wet in order for them to maintain their original shape. Liquid cleansers and those that wind up as water-based solutions are ideal because they solve two different problems at once.

To keep dentures working and looking their best, denture wearers should always remove and rinse them after eating in order to remove food particles and traces of adhesive products. They should also use a denture cleanser product of their liking to clean and store their prosthetic teeth for future use. All dental devices should always be rinsed thoroughly before being put back into the mouth. This is especially important when using any kind of denture-soaking solution. Such solutions often contain harsh chemicals that will cause sickness, stomach pain and vomiting if swallowed.
