Cleaning oriental rugs is more complicated than cleaning ordinary rugs. These types of rugs are delicate and quite expensive. The mistake of using the wrong cleaning product can be costly and unpleasant. If you are very careful, you can clean your oriental rug yourself. But just in case, it is better to have it done by a professional. Here are some tips on how to clean your beautiful rug.

Vacuum the rug

First, vacuum the rug from both sides, top, and bottom, to remove dust and dirt from the surface. Use a brush head with bristles that are not too stiff. Choose a brush attachment with softer bristles to avoid damaging the delicate fibers and threads of the rug. Also, vacuum the tassels if there are any on your rug.

Roll up the rug

Roll up the rug and take it outside, possibly to the garden. Unroll it on a clean tarp spread out on the ground. Fill a bucket with a gallon of water and add ΒΌ cup of liquid dishwashing detergent. Stir the solution until soapy lather forms. Oriental rugs should be cleaned gently. Therefore, use a soft brush to gently rub the soap mixture into the rug.

Brush the rug

Brush the rug in circular motions until it is thoroughly clean. Rinse it under cold running water with a garden hose. Rinse until you no longer see any soap drops. A good way to rinse is to hang it on a clothesline. Make sure the clothesline is strong enough to support the weight of the wet rug. To rinse the rug, splash it with water while it is hanging on the rope.

Squeeze the rug

You can also squeeze the rug to get rid of excess water. Do not wring out the water as you would from washed clothing. Remember that care must be taken when cleaning an oriental rug. You can leave it on the line to allow the water to drain, then spread it out on a clean tarp to dry on the floor. Protect the rug from direct sunlight to prevent the color from fading.

Dry it

Once the top part is dry, turn it over so the other side can air dry as well. If your rug is small and not too heavy, you can air dry it on a clothesline. If you leave a large, wet, heavy rug on the clothesline, it may tear, and the freshly cleaned rug will fall onto the dirty floor. If you leave a large mat on the fishing line, place a tarp under it to keep the mat clean in case it falls.

Cleaning an oriental rug can be difficult and time-consuming, especially if it is a large rug. For a large, wet rug, you may need 2-3 people to help you. Think about this before you decide to clean it yourself. You can always contact a professional cleaning company to clean it if you don't have help in the house.
