Rebekah Brooks’s husband today hit out at the justice system after a judge threw out his claim for £500,000 in legal costs from the marathon phone hacking trial.

Charlie Brooks, a former racing trainer, said: "At least on a racecourse, when you back a winner the bookmakers pay you."

Mr Justice Saunders told him that even though he had been cleared he had brought suspicion on himself.

Brooks, 51, was funding his own defence, unlike his wife Rebekah Brooks and other former News of the World executives whose costs were paid by Rupert Murdoch.

The judge also refused a similar application by ex-NoW managing editor Stuart Kuttner for £130,000.

Rebekah Brooks was found not guilty of phone hacking, conspiring to pay government officials and perverting the course of justice. She did not apply for her costs to be repaid. Kuttner, 74, was acquitted of phone hacking and Mr Brooks was acquitted of conspiring to pervert the course of public justice by hiding potential evidence against his wife.

TV presenter Richard Madeley has contacted police regarding rape threats directed at his daughter Chloe following controversial comments on rape made by her mother, Judy Finnigan.

Ms Finnigan came in for criticism after commenting on the case involving former footballer Ched Evans, who was jailed in 2012 for raping a 19-year-old woman.

On ITV talk show Loose Women, Ms Finnigan said "the rape was not violent" and that Evans "didn’t cause any bodily harm to the person".

Mr Madeley today claimed that his daughter, Chloe, 27, had been threatened with rape on social media.

"Thanks to everyone who tweeted support for Judy’s intelligent, clear analysis 2day," Mr Madeley tweeted.

"Trolls who sent sick rape threats? Prosecution awaits you."

He added in another message: "Yup. I have noted every sick troll threat.

"Do they really think it’s OK to wish/threaten rape on a woman. They’re in deep trouble, trust me."

Chloe wrote on her Twitter account: "To the trolls wishing rape on me, stop, you are utterly pathetic."

Judy Finnigan said on Loose Women: "The rape, and I am not, please, by any means minimising any kind of rape – but the rape was not violent. He didn’t cause any bodily harm to the person.

"It was unpleasant, in a hotel room, I believe, and she was – she had far too much to drink.

And you know, that is reprehensible, but he has been convicted and he has served his time."

A police spokesman could not immediately confirm whether officers had been called in to investigate the claims.
