Ideas to Modify Dog Door to Cat Door
Posted: Sep 03, 2021
Someone says, "It is a bad plan that admits no modification." When we opt for a modification, that must carry a greater interest. The same applies to your plan to modify your dog and cat pet doors. Yes, the thought might have come to your mind once or twice if you have owned these pets ever.
Here we would educate you with some ideal tips that can help you modify your existing old dog or cat pet doors to a beautiful cat door on your own.
Let's begin.
Most of the dog doors have magnets at the bottom of the flaps that keep the doors shut when they are not in use. As dogs are stronger than cats, you need to adjust the magnet strength to prevent the cat from opening the door.
Step 1 | Watch The Cat
First, watch how your pet goes in and out through the door. There is a difference in the way cats and dogs open doors. Usually the dog just runs right through it and the cat puts her paw through the edge of it to open the door and then slides her body through.
Considering this, you need to fit the magnets at about the height and location where the cat would normally be trying to push through. Suppose the cat likes the right side more than the left, you should place two sets of magnets on that side only. In case your furry friend pushes the door in different spots, you need to fit the magnets on those areas of the door. But make sure what are its favorite spots.
Step 2 | Get The Supplies
After setting up your mind for DIY, you need to make ready all the supplies required. You just visit your nearby hardware store and give the boy your long list that could contain the following stuff.
A large size magnet with screw holes in the casing at both end
Two small size magnets with holes in its middle
An ideal size of 10 x 5/8? screws to attach the larger magnets to the door
A size of 6 – 32 tpi x 2? screws to attach the smaller magnets to the flap (You are free to pick shorter ones than these)
Lock nuts of 6 – 32 tpi for the longer screws
For 2 places on the door, you have to buy two packages of each type of magnet – 2 larger and 4 smaller magnets. You can adjust the number you need according to the size of your pet cat.
Step 3 | Attach the Magnets to the Door
After that I cut the edge of the plastic off on the dog door flap to make it fit around the magnets on the frame. In the end, attach one small magnet on the flap's either side in order to make the edge of those magnets come together with the large magnet. You need to make sure that you have fixed them all in the right way so that your sweating becomes meaningful.
You can now make your own cat pet door; however, it is better to buy a well-furnished cat door from a reputable company with a good pet door installer. It is because if you fail to fix all these in an appropriate way, it turns into a nightmare for you as you have already spent your money and time.
