SU Carburetors – an important part of automobile engines
Posted: Oct 19, 2014
A carburetor is an essential part of an automobile engine that blends air and fuel. The main function of the carburetor is to convert liquid fuel into vapor.
Carburetors are widely applicable in the automotive industry, aircraft and other diesel or petrol engines. They work on Bernoulli's principle: the faster air moves, the lower its static pressure, and the higher its dynamic pressure. They are generally installed in all gasoline vehicles like boats, aircraft and many others. Most of the engines are installed with just one carburetor but those with high capacity may have four or more carburetors. A carburetor in an engine is supposed to measure the airflow of the engine, deliver the right amount of fuel to keep the fuel/air mixture in the proper range and mix the two efficiently.
Depending on their mechanism and functionality, carburetors can broadly be categorized into downdraft and side-draft carburetors. In the downdraft carburetor, the flow of air is downwards while a side-draft carburetor ensures sideways flow of air. In the U.S, most automobiles are installed with downdraft carburetors. When talking about the side draft carburetors, they are mostly used in Europe. Carburetors can also be classified as constant depression or variable choke and fixed choke. The variable choke feature simple adjustment and easy maintenance. Carburetors may have different capacities to provide the right blend of fuel and air under all various engine operating conditions. Operating conditions here refers to different speeds at which an engine operates.
A carburetor typically has an open pipe that is the carburetor's "barrel" or "throat" through which the air is delivered to the engine. The air flow is controlled by the butterfly valve or the "throttle" in this pipe. This valves affects the power and speed of the engine. This throttle is connected to the accelerator of the vehicle. Basic carburetors have only one Venturi or "barrel" while others may have more than one. Configurations of two and four barrels are generally used to accommodate the higher air flow rate with large engine displacement. SU Carburetors remain in great demands across the market, owing to their easy installation, non-interrupted functionality, longer service life and low maintenance. They are manufactured using high-end technology as per the set industry standards. After being manufactured, they are checked on a series of parameters to ensure their overall functionality. You can avail these carburetors in various specifications so as to meet your diverse requirements.
The author of this article has broadly explained about the Holley carburetor rebuild kits and SU Carburetors with their functionality and application areas. These carburetors measure and control the airflow of an engine, blend air and fuel, and deliver the right amount of fuel to the engine.
