Soon, we will be carving out pumpkins and taking out our spooky décor because Halloween is almost here. Kids will be super excited because the spooky season brings with it candies and fun! Why not mix some learning to all the fun without making it boring?

Halloween is perfect for fueling a child’s creativity and sparking their imagination. While instigating a sense of wonder in children, the spooky season can also be an opportunity to practice skills like reading and writing.

The nighttime reading ritual with educational children’s books about diversity and "Tell me what did you learn at school today?" are things you do 365 days a year, but with this well-loved holiday, you can give a fun twist to learning. We made a list of fun activities to embrace Halloween festivities while improving your child’s literacy skills.

Spooky Season Word List

Ghostly. Enchanting. Eerie.

What are other interesting words describing Halloween that come to mind? Holidays provide an excellent chance to enhance your child’s vocabulary. Create a list of ‘Halloween Words.’ Divide the list into different categories, like characters, foods, and decorations, depending on the age of your child, ghouls, witches, pumpkins, cobwebs, and cauldron.

Once the list is complete, decorate it with drawings representing the words with your child, and put it up on the wall.

Halloween Writing Exercise

When you read multicultural or diverse children's books with your child, you talk to them about their favorite characters and the favorite part of the story to boost the learning experience. Each holiday is rooted in culture and history and can be a learning experience for children.

Have a ‘Why we celebrate Halloween’ night. After that, you can encourage your child to write down everything that comes to mind about the holiday. Maybe they can write a poem. They can use words from your Halloween word list.

Read Books for Costume Inspirations

Dressing up as their favorite character is a LOT of fun for children. If your child is confused about which character to pick this year, read diverse children’s books for inspiration instead of watching TV shows. Your child is motivated to explore new genres and titles, and they get their Halloween costume idea, a win-win!

Combine Role Play and Trick-or-Treating

Young kids are super excited about Halloween also because of the trick-or-treating tradition. Use the opportunity to spark their imagination and strengthen their literacy skills by including role-paly.

If you are trick-or-treating at home this Halloween, decorate cardboard box houses to help your little ones get into character. Children can dress up and do funny voices, all from the safety of their homes. If their characters are inspired by books, re-enact stories with them to develop their comprehension skills and help them understand the narrative better.

Final Words

Who says learning can’t be fun? This Halloween, try the above activities to boost your child’s reading and writing skills while thoroughly enjoying themselves.
