Timothy Gallwey summarizes the objective of coaching as:

Performance = potential – interference (P = p – i)

Coaching is a process that helps individuals, teams, and organizations improve their behaviour, cognition, actions, decision-making, and overall efficiency. A coach helps a coachee make a change, learn new skills, or achieve their goals. This is done through conversation, which can take place in person, over the phone, or online.

How does Coaching work?

Coaching is based on the fundamental belief that we already have the answers we seek. The role of a coach is to assist the coachee in obtaining these responses. This is done through a variety of conversational techniques such as enquiry, active listening, observation, and reflection.

When these techniques are used, the coachee receives more self-awareness and, in many cases, a new insight. Having a non-judgmental, non-biased individual available to provide total focus allows the coachee to understand how to proceed.

Coaching is a two-way street between the coach and the client. The coach works with the client to help them achieve their personal best and the desired results in both their personal and professional lives. Coaching enables the client to perform at their peak, learn and grow in the way that they want. The coach does not need to be an expert in their clients' field.

What Coaching is NOT?1. Mentoring- When a senior colleague who is perceived to be more knowledgeable and wise in the world offers advice and serves as a role model, this is referred to as mentoring.2. Counseling- Counseling is the process of assisting a client who is unhappy or dissatisfied with their life.3. Therapy- The process of working with a client who is seeking relief from psychological or physical symptoms is referred to as "therapy."4. Training- The process of acquiring knowledge, skills, and abilities through study, experience, or instruction is known as training.5. Consultancy- A consultant offers expertise and assists businesses in solving problems or growing as a whole.6. Teaching- Teaching is the process of passing on knowledge from teacher to student.

Now we hope that the fundamentals are clear and profound of what coaching is and what coaching is not.
