In India, it is slowly becoming mandatory for industries to implement energy management systems that meet IEEE 519-2014 standards. Tamil Nadu has already made IEEE 519-2014 compliance mandatory; Maharashtra will enforce it by 2023. No doubt other states will also follow suit.

The soon-to-be mandatory IEEE 519-2014 standard defines the voltage and harmonics distortion criteria for electrical systems.

What does that mean for you and your business?

WHAT IS IEEE 519-2014?

IEEE-519 is a system guideline for setting limits on voltage and current distortion, by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a non-profit professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation related to electricity.

The IEEE-519-2014 standard details the recommended practices and requirements regarding harmonic control in electrical power systems. It defines the specific and separate responsibilities for each participant – utilities and users – to maintain the voltage THD within acceptable limits at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) between the utility and the user, and protect the user and utility equipment from the negative impact of harmonics.

WHY IS POWER QUALITY MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT?

Be it conventional or service sector, it is critical for industry to pursue Energy Efficiency (EE) because of the increasing application of electronic loads and digital controllers which are sensitive to the quality of power supplied. PQ and reliability are critical for the successful delivery of a product and uninterrupted operation of an industry.

In the world of power electronics, bad power quality can cause malfunctioning of sophisticated equipment. Harmonics, voltage unbalance, voltage sag and flicker problems, standing waves and resonance – are some of the issues that adversely affect energy consumption, production and its quality, leading to huge loss in terms of energy, product, service, and damage to equipment.

HOW CAN MESSUNG HELP?

In India, Messung Systems (Electrical Engineering Div.) is the authorised distributor for Janitza electronics GmbH.

A world leader in development and manufacture of energy management solutions, Janitza's energy measurement technology is setting the standard throughout the world.Power quality analyzers, digital energy meters, active filters, visualisation software and apps – Messung offers the complete Janitza range of power quality and energy management solutions.

For efficient power quality monitoring, power measurement and analysing, Janitza offers UMG 512 PRO - a fixed Class A power quality analyzer in compliance with IEC 61000-4-30 Class A, EN 50160and IEEE 519-2014 standards. UMG 512 PRO reliably records, analyses and documents all interferences such as harmonics, unbalance, transients, voltage dips, voltage swells, flickers, phase shifts and reactive power.

Janitza’s UMG 96-PA series of energy measurement devices for collecting and monitoring electrical measured valuesenables not only energy management, but also power quality monitoring and residual current monitoring in a single device. Residual currents can be detected at an early stage and equipment damage and production downtimes avoided. The UMG 96-PA-MID version also allows companies to record energy data relevant for billing.

Utilising Janitza’s technology and their own engineering and industrial expertise, Messung develops customised energy management systems as per IEEE 519 to optimise energy efficiency. To build a healthy PQ environment, Messung’s solutions will:

  • Undertake PQ monitoring and periodic power quality audit (PQ Audit)
  • Maintain power factor within prescribed limits to reduce reactive power demand, which in turn will balance the voltage in your premise and also overall network
  • Reduce harmonic currents while using more energy efficient equipment at your premise
  • Keep a log of faced power disturbances at premises, which may come handy in finding effective solutions
  • Capture financial information correlated with the PQ event for establishing return on investment in proposing any PQ mitigation proposal before the plant management.
