Posted: Sep 24, 2021
Before getting into how to install openSIS, let us first understand what openSIS or Open Source Student Information System is? Why and who needs it?
What is openSIS? Why & who needs it?
openSIS is one of several free open source information systems for K-16 institutions. This solution has been in development for several years and seems to have many features that have been in commercial versions for a long time. Solutions is a web application developed and maintained by Open Solutions for Education, Inc.
The student information system software is designed to store all of the student's details directly related to their overall academic performance. SIS stores information and makes it easy to find anytime, anywhere. Helps to manage students' academic, extracurricular and disciplinary records. with one click. It is also a system that provides seamless integration between parents, teachers, students, and school administrators. Now let us learn how one can Install the software after downloading it from opensis.com.
How to Install openSIS
You can install and run openSIS on windows 10, Desktop, and Windows 2008, 2012, 2016 Server OS, Mac, Linux, Ubuntu. Here are the ways to install. Before we start with the installation, download the latest version from https://opensis.com/download. Before downloading I would recommend checking the demo you can find on the same page so you can get a trial of the actual product.
Please note- to use the software you are required to have a server installed like XAMPP/ Bitnami or others to run a PHP written file according to the operating system you use. You can check out here to know and download the right server.
When you are done with downloading the server and installing it, go ahead and download the openSIS software and if already downloaded, open your file explorer and spot your file with the name opensis(version downloaded written).
On unzipping the file you will find a file with the name openSIS or openSIS classic (version written) that you need to extract and rename if you want, that will later be used in the localhost link that you will see below.
Now if you are an IT person you can open the file and find all the necessary files and codes encrypted that you can well understand and if you are a novice like me just simply let the files be as they are, I would recommend not opening the file and straight copy the file and paste it on the server file that you can find in the windows C drive. Simply open the windows C drive open the server file you have downloaded and installed,
Track the "htdocs" file, open it and paste the opensis file you previously copied, and you are done. Easy as that this is the most simple installation of SIS software you can ever find.
Now you are ready to start using the openSIS software. For that open and run your web server, start the "apache" & "MySQL" before opening your web browser without the server software running you will not be able to access the source link(given in the next step) will lead to an error page any time you try.
Thereafter simply open any browser (this is your workspace online), type localhost/opensis (or whatever folder name you have used during unzipping the code), this is your localhost link, and then press enter.
Click on Install on the page that opens, fill in your details and if you have not given any server password you can simply leave it blank. After putting in all the details you are in.
Note-
- The installation needs access to a file named "data.php" that stores necessary information for the connection to the database and default school year information.
- The web server of the machine where openSIS is being installed must allow writing access so the file can be modified or created.
- In most cases, the file is included with the distributed files, in this case only its "permissions" need to be modified.
Log in as the user you created during install, With this login, you can create new users or change the free template users. Since students can not be deleted the template student should be changed to a proper student and the template photo deleted.
Zeroing in on any available school management application is inappropriate. It must cater to the all-round requirements of the school and also be future-ready.
