The education of children is integral for their development and wholesome upbringing. Education helps children in many ways as it nurtures and encourages social and emotional growth, and cultivates creative abilities. Life skills, knowledge as well as overall capabilities further enhance when education is provided from an early age. Every child deserves to go to school and receive a regular and quality education, irrespective of their caste, gender, socio-economic status etc.

Underprivileged, unfortunately, are deprived of this basic necessity which is also their birth-right. Children's education in India needs to be given more importance to help broaden their horizons, develop a comprehensive worldview and eventually help them have an understanding of varied worldly topics. Education also increases the chances of children growing up and landing a stable job with regular pay. This even protects them from the vicious cycle of illiteracy, child labour, child marriage etc.

An estimated 46.24 million children were out of school in 2016 (DISE 2016-17 and RGI Census Population Projection 2016). This is happening due to multiple reasons. Many households face abject poverty and that is why parents avoid sending their children to school. They’d rather have the child engage in labour or handle household chores. In other cases, the girls of the house are married off as they are considered a burden and financial constraints push the parents further to decrease a mouth to feed. This can have quite a negative impact on the psychological, physical, and mental well-being of the child.

In the case of first-generation students, many children are dropped out due to a lack of awareness. Parents do not support the concept of attending school and are still unaware of the innumerable benefits of education, immediate and long-term. According to Census 2011, 73% of working children have dropped out of school. This makes their chances of receiving education bleaker and pushes them towards a compromised quality of life.

CRY (Child Rights and You) is a trusted and reputed non profit organisation that has been working hard to ensure underprivileged children have access to education and the opportunity to attend schools.
