A couple looking for something a bit out of the ordinary for an engagement ring should definitely take the time to look into choosing a vintage engagement ring. Guaranteed to display a one-of-a-kind charm, an antique ring usually has a better price with exquisite craftsmanship and tonnes of character.

What is Vintage?

A vintage, or antique, ring is specifically more than 50 years old, while an estate engagement ring is anything less than 50 years old but still a ‘used’ item. Some jewellers use the term ‘vintage’ to describe a ring that was made to look like it was from a different era; however, the term vintage engagement rings is generally used to encompass the whole range.

One of the best aspects of a vintage ring is its craftsmanship. When looking closely at an antique ring, often the craftsmanship will be so unique and intricate that it would be extremely expensive to commission a modern jeweller to create a similar work. In many cases, this cost of replication would be several times as much as simply buying the antique.

Another benefit of vintage engagement rings is that you can focus on aspects that would have to be compromised with a normal ring due to price, such as the centre stone. If you like the look of a large diamond but cannot afford one, search for a ring from the 1930s or 40s. Many of these are set in elaborately carved bands that make the diamond appear significantly larger than it is in reality.

Many vintage engagement rings also use more unusual centre stones that create a breathtaking piece. However, one must be careful when considering softer stones such as pearls, emeralds, or opals as they can be prone to damage when worn daily. This caution also applies to the diamonds used in older rings, as many might not meet today’s standards with respect to colour and clarity. Several generations ago, people often searched for stones with tints of red, green, or yellow for their rings, whereas today a perfectly colourless diamond is considered the most valuable. Old diamonds might also have more internal flaws, as the technology for discovering them was nowhere near as advanced as it is today.

With exquisite craftsmanship, diamond enhancements, and unusual centre stones, a vintage ring has it all. For a couple who have a budget and are looking for a one-of-a-kind ring with a lot of character, a vintage ring may be the perfect fit.
