Parylene is perfect for protecting and coating several parts in the instrumentation, medical, and electrical industries. Parylene coatings refer to an array of polymer coatings that especially serve as dielectric and moisture barriers. The polymer's chemical texture features a uniform and thin coatings. From the perspective of engineering applications, it isn't easy to decide the type of suitable coating. However, these coatings aren't perfect for certain applications. You'll have to choose the compatibility of chemical structure, mechanical structure, process, and component. These coatings have a wide range of applications, from parylene coatings, conventional coating to coatings on plastic.

Parylene includes a wide variety of several polymer coatings that aims to serve as dielectric and moisture barriers. The polymer coatings come with a linear or polycrystalline structure. The polymer's chemical structure allows for uniquely uniform and thing coatings. Besides, the coatings can blend on a molecular level with a substrate to ensure the coating is uniform and even throughout the whole substrate. Parylene is applicable on heart pumps and stents. The parylene coatings can be applied to different electrical components exposed to rough environmental conditions like aerospace and automotive industries.

Types of Parylene coatings

There are several kinds of Parylene- the most commonly used is Parylene

  • Parylene C- Includes a combination of chlorine atoms with carbon-hydrogen. It is highly moisture resistant.
  • Parylene D- Similar to Parylene C, however, it includes two chlorine atoms. It can withstand higher temperatures up to 125 degrees Celsius, but it isn't too biocompatible.
  • Parylene HT: While being UV stable, this coating includes a single fluorine atom. It is perfect for coatings as it is the most durable form of Parylene.
  • Parylene N- It is the most simple kind of Parylene that includes Hydrogen and Carbon structure.

A Parylene coat uses the process of vapor deposition polymerization. The process takes place within a vacuum when left at room temperature. Parylene coating includes two polymerization chambers along with a vacuum chamber where the coating will be deposited. You can apply Parylene coatings to the different substrates as per their structure and capability to withstand vacuum. Such materials are stainless steel, silicon, ceramics, and paper, to name a few.

What are the advantages of Parylene coating?

Parylene is a perfect choice to shield several components within the medical, instrumentation, and electronics industries. This is because of the several advantages of Parylene that is listed below:

  • Transparency: Parylene's transparent feature makes it a perfect choice for coating optical devices.
  • Stress-free: As the coating procedure is done at room temperature, the process is free from a surface or internal stresses.
  • Biologically and chemically inert: This feature makes Parylene coated components suitable for installing with little to no risk of infection or rejection.
  • High resistance to solvents: Substances that are destructed due to solvents can be repaired by applying Parylene coatings.
  • High thermal resistance: Parylene coatings can endure high temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius. A few Parylene types can withstand heat up to 350 degrees Celsius.
  • Hydrophobic: The electronic components are usually prone to damages caused due to water. Parylene coatings can repel water effectively.
