Virgil van Dijk faces huge Man City test, but it could cement his Liverpool comeback
Posted: Oct 06, 2021
Returning from a long stint on the side-lines is never easy, and hitting top form is expected to take time. Players need to get back into the rhythm of games, reigniting partnerships with players on the pitch — not to mention the psychological effects of coming back from the injury itself. Patience is needed.
And yet, the trio have hardly skipped a beat. Van Dijk and Matip have formed a solid partnership in the heart of the defence, with the pair now Jürgen Klopp’s preferred duo.
Liverpool know they can only focus on themselves this season, as the cliche goes, and that, to an extent, is true.
But when Manchester United slip up, Reds fans are always going to notice.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba were both left on the bench by Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and that decision was perhaps one he was left to rue.
Both players appeared from the sidelines in the second half, but in truth, United were fortunate to come away with a point against Everton given Tom Davies' decision to pass rather than shoot allowed them to escape further punishment late on.
Having lost at home to Aston Villa last week, and West Ham in the Carabao Cup prior to that, the pressure is now surely mounting on the Norwegian.
Things do not get any easier, either. Leicester City are next up for United after the international break and while they are struggling early on this season, are at least a similar level of threat to Everton.
Then come Atalanta home and away in the Champions League, with Liverpool and Tottenham in between, and the Manchester derby immediately afterwards.
That, certainly, is a tricky run of games.
Elsewhere, Chelsea were eventual winners against Southampton, though even they made the job as difficult for themselves as they could.
Trevoh Chalobah's free header at the back post put Chelsea in front, but then Thomas Tuchel was left absolutely furious with referee Martin Atkinson as Timo Werner's first-half goal was ruled out by the VAR.
César Azpilicueta was adjudged to have made a foul in the build-up but the German did not agree.
James Ward-Prowse equalised from the penalty spot before he was sent off after another VAR intervention, and then Werner and Ben Chilwell capped a 3-1 victory.
On another day, without the red card at 1-1, things could have been very different.
