Back pain can have a significant negative impact on the quality of a person’s life. It doesn’t matter if the pain is a dull constant ache or sharp and shooting, when it comes to discomfort in the spine, a person’s ability to function is affected one way or another. Anyone who has experienced back pain knows this. Those who have had it for an extended period of time often begin to feel desperate. Desperation leads to sometimes making poor treatment decisions by accepting quack therapies. It can also lead to the search of what is colloquially called back pain doctors.

But do back pain doctors really exist?

Not in the true sense of the word. There is no specialty that deals exclusively with pain. There are, however, specialized branches in the field of physicians and other healthcare professionals who have an intimate knowledge of pain and the muscles in the body which allows them to provide good advice and management and prevention of back-pain tips.

It’s estimated that roughly 80 percent of Americans have experienced back pain at one point or another in their lives. Most of the back-pain is preventable if the right steps are taken. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality from the Department of Health and Human Services, the percentage of people who experience back issue as a serious medical condition is as low as 0.5 percent to roughly 1 percent. These individuals should be treated by an orthopedic surgeon.

So, how do you know if you fit into this one percent category? Back pain can have an impact on your daily activities and make you want to do not much but stay in bed and not move. But for it to be considered a serious medical condition, your back pain needs to cause serious symptoms like extreme leg weakness, difficulty controlling bowel or bladder and numbness in the rectum or groin area. These symptoms are called red flags and are often an indicator of a more serious problem. Sometimes surgery can be the solution although back surgery has its own risks and can make the problem worse instead of fixing it.

The rest of the people who experience back issue can prevent or reduce the symptoms by altering their activities, through exercise or manipulation. It’s not necessary to see back pain doctors for these types of life changes, although it may be worthwhile to visit a clinic or some other facility that promotes a multidisciplinary approach to treating the body.

In facilities like this, you’ll often have access to alternative health professionals who can provide you with the guidance needed to make the modifications to your life to help you back health. This includes physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, nutritionists, athletic trainers, acupuncturists, and physical therapists. None of these professionals could be considered doctors but they have the capacity to provide you with the resources necessary to reduce the pain you’re experiencing and prevent additional pain from happening.
