The novel ‘High Fidelity’ is a British based piece that has been written by Nick Hornby. The novel was published in 1995. It has received great appreciation from the public making huge sales. A feature film to the novel was produced in 2000 and a musical appreciation in 2006. The content of the novel is the core reason for its appreciation by the readers. The novel contains a romantic storyline whereby events in the novel have been placed with definite reasons for their occurrence. The current essay aims at reflecting on these events, the reason why these events happened and the main theme of the novel, male insecurity.

The romantic background of the story creates a motivation course of events in the novel. The actions of the main character of the novel, Rob Fleming, are determined by the romantic hurricanes that surround him. Rob is portrayed as a person, who is determined in his work. "My shop is called Championship Vinyl. I sell punk, blues, soul, and R&B, a bit of ska, some indie stuff, some sixties pop, everything for the serious record collector". Rob operates vintage record store in London. The store flourishes due to his determined actions. Rob is agitated by his romantic life and this makes him more focused on his job.

Rob is also portrayed to be hospitable to the visitors of his record store. He readily accepts people, who come to his store either to perform or to watch the events that take place there. For instance, Rob takes comfort of the visit by Marie La Salle to the Company. Marie has been defined as "pretty in that nearly cross-eyed American way". Rob's attraction to Marie was influenced by the heartbreaks that he had undergone because of being dumped by several ladies. More specifically, during Marie’s visit, he broke up with Laura, making him to be more hospitable to Marie. Therefore, the actions of Rob were motivated by certain issues that he had encountered.

Rob’s actions in the novel are portrayed to have regret in them. He keeps on regretting his past. At times he wishes that he had not committed himself to some commitments. On the other hand he frequently recalls the history he had with his former girlfriends. "I’m not as vulnerable as I was when Alison or Charlie dumped me". Due to his regrets, he frequently gets in touch with his former girlfriends. These actions by Rob make the novel interesting because an atmosphere of suspicion is created whereby the reader needs to know what action Rob would take.

Vintage Record Store mainly focused on pop music. The store created music charts for pop music. In addition, most of the visitors of the store were pop artists who sought recording assistance from Rob’s store. The specialization of the store in pop music influenced some actions to be taken. For instance, pop music was the reason why Rob fell in love. "Cos you liked their second one, you said. Pop, girls, etc". Pop music had a great influence on Rob to an extent that he was always in a relationship with a lady. Pop music was also the reason why he regretted his past relationships with females. Therefore, Rob’s actions in his romantic life were motivated by the influence of pop music.

Laura’s relationship with Rob illustrated that they were intimate with each other. This is because after their break up, there were actions of regrets between the two. "….if you want to force your way onto the list, you’ll have to do better than this". This increases the probability that they would eventually get back to each other. The incident of Laura’s father’s death brings the two together. They re-unite and carry on with their romantic relationshipTherefore, the main cause of Laura’s re-union with Rob was the intimacy they had before the break up and the death of Laura’s father.

In conclusion, the theme of male insecurity is seen in the actions of Rob. The fact that he regrets his past makes him insecure, and causes him to act in an unpredictable way. Therefore, every action that Rob takes in the novel has a clear reason for it. This means that the novel has a clear continuous flow that is supported by solid explanations.
