Internet speed test

Consider the case where you want to test internet speed.

Internet speed is often denoted as Mbps (megabit per second).

You can find out your current internet speed by:

  1. Using an internet speed testing website such as Speedtest or Ookla's Speedtest.
  2. Running a LAN (local area network) benchmark utility on your computer, provided that your hardware supports it. An example of this is iperf.
  3. Testing it manually through transferring files between computers connected in a wired or wireless fashion using tools like scp, sftp, rsync, etc.. However, this is not considered accurate due to factors such as packet loss, overhead incurred by protocols used to transfer files, etc., but it might work in some cases.
  4. Using a speed test app for mobile phones to measure your phone's upload and download speeds, which are usually slightly lower than your internet connection's "real" download speed. However, most smartphones cannot provide accurate results because they lack the necessary hardware (e.g., ethernet port) to connect to your modem/router using an ethernet cable. A few newer devices may support this through USB, but their speeds will likely be slower than what you can get by directly connecting via ethernet cable due to limitations on protocols over USB ( e.g., On-The-Go). Also, only data that goes through wireless transmission is measured by these apps so wired connections are not taken into account.

5. Contacting your ISP (internet service provider) or manufacturer of your modem/router to find out the maximum speed that they guarantee their hardware to run at.. As a reference, most ISPs offer connection speeds up to 100-300 Mbps for traditional broadband connections and 1-10 Gbps for fiber optic connections. Factoring in overheads incurred by protocols used to transfer files, etc., the real world sustained download speed may be around 50% or less of these values. Also check this guide for more information https://www.charterspeedtest.info/ar/

On Speedtest.net, upload speed is listed first while download speed is listed second on the final result page after testing internet speed. On Ookla's website, however, download speed is always denoted first followed by uploads unless you are on a mobile device, in which case upload speeds are denoted first.

Internet speed can be generally increased by:

  1. Upgrading your hardware to use the latest standards for technologies used to deliver internet services, such as Cat 5e cables for ethernet connections or USB 3.0/3.1 instead of USB 2.0.
  2. Having an ISP that uses less congested routes between you and destinations that you frequently access data from (if possible). This is because if there are many other people using the same routes as you are at the same time, it will put more load on those routes which make data transfer slower due to congestion. This can be mitigated somewhat by ISPs implementing their own caching mechanisms without the need for end-user involvement.
  3. Using a good quality ethernet cable - Cat 5e is the current standard in most cases, whereas Cat 6a has better protection against external noise which improves performance at shorter distances. Wireless technology may be used instead of wired connections. You can get online speeds that are similar to what you could get through wired ethernet using wireless ethernet (WiFi) or WiGig, but the maximum throughput that your devices can handle will depend on their capabilities and other factors such as location relative to access points, interference from other devices, etc.. Also, many wireless technologies require line-of-sight between transmitter and receiver so they do not function well in environments where there are obstructions blocking the signal path.

Some smartphone models may also support wired/wiredless charging or USB 3.0 through their micro-USB ports. If your device uses the latter, check for USB 3.1 to find out if it can take advantage of higher speeds when transferring data to other devices (more info here ). There may be limitations in using smartphones as effective tools to measure internet speed due to factors such as network protocols used by mobile carriers and interference from other sources in the environment.
