In a vehicle, the engine is often considered as the prime part to move it effectively. However, the engine is useless if its generated power goes nowhere. There the use of drivetrain comes in. The drivetrain and its parts are responsible for transferring power produced by the engine to the wheel to move the vehicle. They are also accountable for the division of power on a vehicle tire. Read on to learn the importance of drivetrain parts in truck.

What is Drivetrain?

The Truck’s drivetrain, often known as the powertrain, sends the engine’s power through the transmission to move the wheels and several parts of the drivetrain system to push it into motion. The drivetrain is not a solitary part of the vehicle- it’s a combination of parts that includes transmission, Axles, Differential, and Driveshaft.

Essential Parts of Drivetrain

The drivetrain incorporates four prime parts, and it is included in all types of drive, whether it is rear-wheel, front-wheel, or all-wheel. The components are:

Transmission

The transmission plays a significant role in drivetrain functioning. It sends power from the engine to the wheels of the vehicle. Along with this, it allows the driver to shift the gear as per his needs.

Differential

The power generated by the engine reaches the differential by passing through transmission. While driving around a corner, the inside wheels of a vehicle travel a shorter distance than outside wheels. Therefore, the outside wheels need to move faster to cover the difference. The differential role is to control which wheel gets how much power while it is moving at varying speeds.

Driveshaft

A drive shaft or propeller shaft is a mechanical component made up of steel or aluminum cylinders. It is used for transmitting torque and rotation to other components of a drivetrain that cannot be combined directly due to distance.

Axle

An axle or axletree is the essential drivetrain part truck that manages to rotate the wheel and support heavy vehicles’ weight such as Trucks. It is located on either side of the differentials and helps deliver power passed from differentials to rear drive wheels. In addition to this, it has three main types: front, rear and stub.

Working of Drivetrain

The function of the drivetrain is explained in the following steps.

Step 1: The engine generates the power to operates other components of the vehicle system.

Step 2: The flywheels operate with the transmission to control the power distribution of other crucial drivetrain elements.

Step 3: The driveshaft rotates to transmits power to the differential.

Step 4: After that, the differential delivers power to all those driveshaft parts.

Step 5: Finally, the wheels are in motion.
