Duct Cleaning - Why It Is Necessary

Duct cleaning is an important aspect of indoor air quality. Ducts are porous structures or tubes used to transport air through an air duct system. The required airflows consist of, for instance, return air, exchange air, and vent air. Ducts also carry ventilation air within the duct system as a part of their normal function. Duct cleaning is therefore a critical maintenance process.

A duct must be maintained free from dirt, debris, mold, mildew, rodents, moisture, rust, dust, and overheated air. Many manufacturers recommend frequent cleanings between professional cleaning. However, professional cleaning may not be practical for residential areas with higher than average negative pressure. For these areas, most duct cleaning technicians use an ozone machine to kill all forms of mold spores and disinfect vents with negative pressure.

Some homeowners do their own duct cleaning. In this case, they should wear safety equipment such as dust masks and respirators. Ozone can irritate the eyes, nasal mucosa, throat, and lungs. This gas can also destroy surfaces it hits, including wood, metal, and drywall.

Most homeowners who attempt duct cleaning on their own often do so without the proper protective gear. Unbeknownst to them, their breathing masks and breathing tubes may not protect them from the effects of ozone. High levels of ozone can cause shortness of breath and death within fifteen minutes. Homeowners who perform indoor air purification systems, which clean indoor air by using ozone, usually do so without protective gear. Purifiers remove dust and other particles but not mold spores, dust mites, and other indoor allergens. Consequently, they inhale the same particles that others breathe.

The goal of an air duct cleaning process is to remove contaminants from the air inside a building. They can be biological (such as bacteria) or chemical. In the past, most homeowners thought it was not possible to effectively remove all contaminants from air ducts. New technologies have made it possible to effectively sanitize building air and eliminate toxic allergens and vapors. Today's air duct cleaning technicians use advanced equipment and techniques that were not available in previous decades. These new methods are more effective, less damaging, and less costly than methods that were used in previous years.

Many experts agree that dirty air ducts cause allergic reactions and other health problems. In fact, the majority of people who have been exposed to dirty ducts suffer from respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, runny nose, and coughing. According to some studies, duct cleaning is the best way to remove the bacteria that are found in most ducts and in many residential homes. Duct cleaning is also important because it reduces the number of microbial cysts present in the air in your home.

If you think that duct-cleaning is not the right option for you, then there are other options available. For example, there are commercial grade heating and air systems that can reduce the amount of dust that is blown around your home or business. There are other options such as air-to-air heat exchangers, where a fan blows heated air from one side of the room to another, while cold air is pushed through the other side.

Duct-cleaning technicians are trained to locate and eliminate contaminated air ducts. They make sure that the coils are cleaned before they are replaced with new ones. As a rule, if the coils are clean, the duct cleaning technician will suggest that you clean the rest of the ducts as well. Most likely, the technician will recommend that you clean the coils at least once a year, although most professionals suggest that you clean the ducts at least twice a year. While some people may feel that it is not necessary to clean the air ducts as often as the coils, the truth is that the coils carry more dust and debris than any other part on the system.
