It's a lightsaber. It's pink. Why is it important? The pink lightsaber in Star Wars has sparked quite a debate among fans over the years. While the color turns some off, others eagerly pull out their pink lightsabers in battle, declaring, "pink is the new green!" So what does a pink lightsaber mean?

In the original trilogy, a Jedi's lightsaber color represented what side they were on. Green blades belonged to the good guys, and red blades belonged to dark siders. This tradition changed slightly in George Lucas' prequel trilogy. While it still represented who you were aligned with, lightsabers also had an additional purpose. Each lightsaber was imbued with a kyber crystal at its hilt. Kyber crystals are what give lightsabers their color and strength. Good aligned Jedi's wielded 'green' or 'blue' kyber crystals; dark siders carried 'red.'

After the prequels, a few new colors were introduced. Mace Windu carried a Pink Lightsaber with a 'blue' kyber crystal, and General Grevious wielded a red lightsaber with a 'red' kyber crystal. In the Expanded Universe, there are even more color options and multiple blade colors on on.

The color pink has officially been canonized many times over in the Star Wars universe. In The Clone Wars series, General Grievous wielded a 'red' kyber crystal powering his lightsaber. It was given to him by Count Dooku during their apprenticeship under Darth Sidious (also known as Palpatine.) Grievous uses his red blade to kill Jedi master 'Ki-Adi Mundi' in episode 21 of season 4. In the animated series, Grievous also changes his red blade for a blue one at multiple points which can be seen here.

Not only is the pink color canon, but it's also even been included in some official artwork. The cover art for Riptide, an official Clone Wars novel by Christie Golden, can be seen below. The character Adi Gallia is wielding the 'red' kyber crystal-powered lightsaber with a pink blade. Also, in another officially licensed novel, Honor Among Thieves, Han Solo wields Chewbacca's bowcaster. Within the Star Wars universe, it is a weapon that fires small bolts. However, in this novel, Han Solo has customized it to emit a pink blade when he needs more firepower than his blaster can provide. In The Clone Wars series finale episodes, Anakin Skywalker wields a 'blue' kyber powered crystal lightsaber with an amethyst blade. Anakin's former padawan Ahsoka Tano also wields a 'blue' kyber crystal-powered lightsaber with an amethyst blade as well. Why are all these color options important? Because each one is canon, and pink isn't any less suitable than the red, green, blue, or purple blades we've seen in the Star Wars universe. It's not practical from a warrior perspective, but it is canon, and it is fantastic! Now when someone asks you what does a pink lightsaber mean? You can say with confidence- anything you want it to.Type of lightsabers: -Red/Purple= Sith -Green= Jedi -Blue= Jedi -Pink= Whatever you want it to mean. How to fight with a lightsaber:A lightsaber can either be used to deflect blaster bolts, cut through metal objects or kill the enemy. How to protect yourself from a lightsaber:Do not try to block it with your hands or saber. The best way is to use something else like another saber. How to kill someone with a lightsaber:A lightsaber is an extremely balanced weapon; it can effortlessly cut through armor, flesh, and bone. Only the highest level of Jedi have been able to use anything else but a lightsaber to defeat their opponents in combat because any other method would be considered cowardly. If that's not enough information, use your imagination. When will people stop asking this question:We don't know when people will stop asking this question, but it won't belong. It has been answered multiple times everywhere, from the official Star Wars website to fan fiction and anywhere in between. The blog Ask a Jedi Knight also inspired me to create this article.
