Water Resistant vs Waterproof Leather
Posted: Nov 01, 2021
Are you searching for waterproof leather? Many people ask us if leather can be used in areas near water like yacht interiors, summer homes, or beach-side resorts. If it is the right type of leather, yes.
Leather can be used for many purposes. GTEX Fabrics offers LeatherShield to assist designers in choosing the right leather for their projects. Garrett Leather has created LeatherShield, a special class that is only available to select Leather products that can withstand high-traffic areas. These products are treated during tanning to provide flame, stain, and water resistance as well as UV and Anti-bacterial protection with no additional treatment and no added costs. Although 14 product lines fall under the LeatherShield umbrella, Torino is the only waterproof product. What's the difference?
Water Resistant Leather
Leather is a porous, natural material. Some leather types are protected after tanning. This water-resistant finish protects LeatherShield products from liquid absorption. Additional treatment is not required. LeatherShield leather will absorb any liquids that are spilled onto it. Use a dry, clean cloth to wipe the spillage immediately. The liquid will eventually seep into the leather's tiny pores if it is left to sit for more than a few hours. These leathers are made from mineral tanned leather and are water resistant. Even if the liquid seeps through, it will not cause damage to the leather. LeatherShield products offer extra protection from spills and greater durability than fabrics that absorb spills right away.
Waterproof Leather
Torino is made from LeatherShield leather with a waterproof finish. This waterproof finish protects against spills no matter how long they sit on the surface. We placed Torino leather on a vase, and filled it up with water. The leather's finish was not affected by the water over three days. Although this is quite extreme, it provides protection for those who need waterproof protection. Torino is an excellent choice for yachts, summer houses, and beach-side resorts. However, all of our semi-aniline water-resistant products are recommended for those same applications.
Faux leather, also known as "leatherette", or "vegan", is often considered a cheaper alternative to genuine leather. For good reason, genuine leather is highly sought after. Genuine leather is warm and inviting, has exceptional durability and improves with age. In our previous blog, we covered two types of faux leather: bicast and bonded. We continue our comparison with two other types of faux leather: PVC faux leather fabric (PU faux leather fabric) and bonded leather (bonded leather)
