Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo admits his decisive goal against Atalanta reeks of handball. The moment occurred when the two teams clashed on the fourth matchday of Group F of the Champions League, Wednesday (11/3/2021) early morning WIB.

Playing at the Atleti Azzurri Stadium in Italy, Atalanta managed to take the lead thanks to Josip Ilicic's goal in the 12th minute. Then Ronaldo managed to equalize just before half-time.

After that Atalanta took the lead again thanks to Duvan Zapata (56). Ronaldo again became a hero with his goal in injury time while saving his team from defeat. The score ended 2-2.

Controversy occurred before Ronaldo's second goal. Mason Greenwood who provided the assist for the CR7 goal is considered handball.

The incident was clearly seen on reruns and was widely discussed by netizens on social media. Because, the ball touched Greenwood's left hand before the ball fell at Ronaldo's feet.

The referee reviewed the VAR (Video Assistant Referee), but decided that Greenwood had not committed a foul. Ronaldo's goal was finally approved and MU avoided defeat.

After the game Ronaldo admitted that Greenwood had handballed before the goal. But luckily there is a goddess of fortune who helps.

"We had a bit of luck because there was a handball before I scored. But, this is football," Ronaldo said as quoted by BT Sports.

Despite getting a draw, Manchester United remain firmly at the top of Group F standings with 7 points. The numbers collected by the Red Devils are the same as Villarreal in second position. After this, the Red Devils will visit Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica, Wednesday (11/24/2021) early in the morning. Ronaldo is expected to return to the pedestal in the match against the Spanish club in order to maintain hope of qualifying for the Round of 16.

VAR itself considers that Greenwood did not intentionally touch the ball or there was no violation in the CR7 goal process - which is also related to IFAB's revision of the handball rules this year.

UEFA.com also said Ronaldo's goal was born from Greenwood's assist. But that did not dampen the debate on social media.

Atalanta took the lead again through Daniel Zapata's goal in the 56th minute. But again Cristiano Ronaldo was able to vibrate the hosts' goal in injury time to force a 2-2 score.

However, CR7's second goal was discussed. Specifically, the goal process.

As reported by SportBible, a number of football fans on social media questioned the validity of Ronaldo's goal because before that the ball was seen hitting Mason Greenwood's hand.
