There are many things that people would like to know before they begin their preparation for JEE. One of the most important is whether the person should be dropping or not. The JEE exam conducts two rounds- one in April and second in July. So it falls on you which round you want to crack, but there is no way of telling which round will suit you better and then be able to tell whether or not one should drop for that particular round.

The article goes through how many seats each IIT has and how difficult it will be for a candidate to get a seat at any particular IIT.

Intake quota for JEE graduates

The highest number of seats is reserved for graduate students, depending on the percentage of seats available in the various IITs. The number of seats is fixed at 100% in all the IITs by their Governing Council. A student can have the choice to take admission only at one institute.

The table below shows that there are approximately 11000 graduate students in all the IITs. Thus, there are about 11000-11300 seats available to choose from every year after they have cleared JEE for nearly 10000-12000 candidates.

Position Number of seats Availability in IITs 1. General Category (GC) Ph.D. Students 1000 1000 2. Reserved Category (RC) Ph.D. Students 1000 1000 3 Gen/OBC-NCL Ph.D. Students 1000 1000 4. Seats in every IIT for Arts/Commerce/Applied Arts

The following table shows the number of seats available for everyone in the IITs. It is seen that approximately 7000 seats are available for this category since there are approximately 2000 students in every year in each category. However, it might be noted that this is not a fixed number and can change depending upon the number of students taking admission in each category. If the number of students who want to take admission in any particular category increases, then the seats will also decrease proportionately.

Why should you drop for JEE Entrance?

Joint Entrance Examination is the entrance examination for the undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in all the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, National Institutes of Technology and International Colleges.

Admission to these institutions based on your score in JEE Mains exam which is a computer-based test. This examination is conducted jointly by The Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). In JEE Advanced exam one candidate from each IIT will be chosen to get admission.

JEE Mains is conducted annually in multiple sessions throughout the country (India) as per semester for studying in undergraduate engineering and architecture courses. The examination carries a JEE Main score as well as JEE Main rank which determines one's eligibility for applying to different colleges and institutes.
