How to Work Around Smartphone Memory Restrictions
Posted: Oct 30, 2014
Tired of not having enough memory to store all of your games, music, photos and videos on you cell phone? If so, don't go out and buy some memory, or decide to get the phone with the bigger storage next time around, because there are some simple solutions to get by with less, and saving you money at the same time.
The first step to beating the curve on memory necessities in smartphones is to set up a cloud service for some or all of your content. For pictures, services like Microsoft's OneDrive offers 15gb of free space and the App will allow you to automatically back up your pictures remotely. That effectively double the storage of the introductory iPhone model.
Music takes up a lot of space. Despite the best efforts of programmers who have been shrinking the size of files and increasing quality, having a music library can quickly use up all of your stoage space. Streaming music, or making small playlists to take with you is a great way to eliminate the need for the space. If you are a real music lover you might as well get a Spotify account and check out Bandcamp for streaming music as well.
Adjusting the quality of photos and videos can quickly free up some space as well. Taking a hundred selfies to get the right one might be worth more than a thousand words, but they all take up way more than a 1000 bytes. Delete old pictures that have been stored else where, as well as videos and you will find that you have much more storage.
You know those games and apps you downloaded and told yourself you were going to play and then did not? Get rid of them, it's dead weight to the phone and some of them soak up data and battery by running in the background anyway. It's sort of like cleaning your room in the virtual sense, but you can't throw your laundry into the clouds.
Also remember that some phones have microSD card slots that can hold as much as 128GB of data as well. These cards are often a much cheaper way to add memory to a phone than buying the memory from the manufacturer. Less memory does not mean you need to be resticted, but being crafty does not hurt. Getting by on less is a time honored tradition, and many successful people believe that it is the key to their success. Here's to hoping that your new cell phone habits rub off on other areas of your life.
