The Impact of Food Packaging on the Environment
Posted: Nov 14, 2021
It goes without saying that food production, processing, and distribution cannot be separated from the environment. Moreover, it has been established that the industrial or "conventional" way food companies work combined with the way we consume food causes large-scale environmental degradation and contributes to global climate change. As a result, all of this exerts a huge impact on the food system in the forms of drought, flood, or extreme heat and cold affecting crops.
However, new advances, such as investing in the natural environment instead of depleting it, building soil health, clean water systems, and so on, to make agriculture sustainable are rooted in regenerative practices approaching the whole ecosystem differently. These sustainable approaches also reduce industrial farming emissions and build environmental resilience while adapting both food production and the land to climate change. It is high time for key stakeholders to invest in global food conferences, such as the Food 2.0 Conference, and catch up with the latest development and challenges faced by the food industry.Food & beverages events in the USA offer a platform for businesses and professionals to gain insights into the new trends, interact with industry experts, and get recognized for their contributions to the development of the industry.
The food industry impacts the environment in various ways but the most noticeable way is the impact of food packaging. Although modern food packaging provides a way to make food safe, reliable, durable as well as clean. However, it is designed for single time use and is not recycled. Packing (especially plastic) is often seen littering our waterways. As a consequence, the UN declared the plastic pollution of oceans "a planetary crisis." This Problem is not limited to humanity or water but is extended to all aquatic life and to air and soil.
Litter from food packaging poses a major threat to marine life, birds, and otherwise, however, plastic is the most harmful. Of everything - coffee cups, lids, straws, containers - plastic bottles and their caps, plastic wraps, and plastic grocery bags, most of these are designed for single-use and cause harm in the long run.
Even after numerous reviews by environmentalists on these food packaging impacts and the spams on how companies can do their part in reducing plastic usage and introducing sustainable procedures, the food industry has a long way to go in order to undo or remodel the harmful effects.
As responsible consumers, we can contribute to reducing the food packaging impact by making better choices when we buy and consume food. These food choices would impact how much packaging is used, and therefore, the amount of waste and recycling is required. Although recycling minimizes the amount of packaging and the waste caused by it, and hence, less of it makes it to a landfill. In any case, some basic better choices can eliminate the need for the packaging in the first place leading to less waste and less harm to the environment.
