India has more than 11000 public hospitals run on funding by taxpayers. These subscribe to various categories ranging from huge National Level AIIMs to small dispensaries at the district or municipal level. Larger hospitals in major towns and districts funded by the Indian States also provide free health care services within their limits.

Private Hospitals in India

Similarly, there are major chains spread over various mid-level towns and cities besides the metros or State Capitals. These are privately owned chains and standalone medical institutions delivering primary and intensive health care services. Insurance plays a major role in assessing these health care institutions for diagnostics, consultation going through complicated procedures and surgeries.

The private chains are instrumental in providing complicated and advanced surgery and care. They are entirely based on a payment system some of which entertain cashless insurance while in case of the remaining, recovering money through an insurance process is possible. Nevertheless, these are costly by all means but the state of service is excellent in most of the specialty chains with those in big towns delivering on advanced and complex surgical interventions and procedures. Incidentally, because of the higher pay structure they employ highly experienced and trained doctors additionally qualified from major training and fellowship institutions in developed countries. Some of the top-notch doctors and surgeons have established their own hospitals which have garnered international repute.

In spite of low-cost treatments provided by Indian hospitals, the medical outcome is quality-driven. This can be measured by the fact that medical tourism in India is increasing year on year with a thirty percent increase in the arrival of international patients from many countries.

Public Hospitals in India

Indians thus enjoy multi-pay medical care with help of insurance, state funds, and personal cost bearing. The public hospitals usually health clinics and dispensaries have an intense reach right up to remote villages which are often poorly connected by mass transportation. But there are major public hospitals like the AIIMS which are funded by the federal government and offer competitive medical services on par with private health establishments.

AIIMS is a federal government medical facility that also offers post-graduate courses in diverse disciplines of medical science. There are many AIIMS established in this period of time. Thus, they are described as autonomous groups of medical universities. The AIIMS hospitals were established with aim of quality treatment in specialty disciplines as well as being at the forefront of medical research and training. There are a number of courses run by these institutions starting from undergraduate and post-graduate programs to fellowships. The hospitals provide medical services at subsidized rates especially for those below the poverty line in India. Even class-based private ward facilities with luxurious amenities are much affordable than those charged by private hospitals in the country.

Medical Science Colleges are mostly state-funded health care institutions that also impart training. These are established in all major towns and cities with the aim of providing primary health care and basic surgery facilities free of cost. There are 236 private medical colleges in India while the public-owned one number nearly 278 spread pan India.

Generally, there is a great cost difference for varied treatments and surgeries between government-funded medical colleges and private medical colleges. Some governments fund certain surgeries in private hospitals for their citizens subject to conditions. Most of the government employees are funded for health care in private clinics and hospitals as well. Employees also benefit from hospitals, dispensaries, and clinics run by government factories and major public concerns like the railways in the country. This is a way of extending treatments at an affordable cost for the Nation's middle and lower middle class including those below the poverty line.

Even the graduate (MBBS) and post-graduate courses cost a lot more in private institutions with demand for huge donations a certain probability.

MBBS degree is a must for a carrier as a physician or a surgeon this is followed by a post-graduate degree and fellowship for specialization. India also focuses on alternative medicine chiefly Ayurveda and aspirants can graduate (BAMS) in this traditional system of medicine which incorporates certain modern medicine practices and systems as well. Another degree that is available is that of a registered medical practitioner, it is an undergraduate degree obtained from a medical institution recognized by the Government and ICMR or Indian Council of Medical Research. The future of undergraduate degree RMP is bleak due to opposition by trained degree-holding physicians.

As the second most populated democracy in the World, India extends its reach to tertiary levels in distant remote places at affordable costs. Good health care and training system is paying rich dividends in terms of growth in medical tourism. The holistic well-equipped system that delivers at low cost is becoming the focus of attention for international patients globally.
