What is organic evolution?

The theory of organic evolution describes that the origins of the recent kinds of animals and plants can be traced back to pre-existing form, and the distinguishable features found in these new plants and animals is because of the transformation and modifications that have happened in consecutive generation of evolution. It must be borne in mind that the idea of organic evolution was not formulated or invented by Charles Darwin, but instead, there were earlier scientists that have thought about this form of evolution. There were scientists before him as well who had worked on these theories. Notable amongst them are Jean Baptist de Lamarck who was a pioneer in the field of invertebrate paleontology and Erasmus Darwin, who was also the grandfather of Charles Darwin. But their contribution could not gain wide scale acceptance in their era, because the earlier researchers missed out on important data. Another reason for their inability to have a wider acceptance was the Huttonian concept of geologic time. Both the above reasons are important from the perspective of evolutionary discussions. The contribution of Charles Darwin stood out, due to his proposal of what we now know as the Theory of Natural Selection, which explained the mechanism of how these changes have occurred with time.

The reality of organic evolution

The primary link that formulates the Darwin theory and reasoning was the concept of uniformitarianism. This became the breakthrough notion and it necessitated a deeper look into organic evolution. The idea of uniformitarianism stemmed from the understanding that to produce or achieve any natural change, it requires a sufficient amount of time. The association between organic evolution and geologic time is that the very arbitrariness of very little, unplanned evolutionary dissimilarities in species that yield perceptible changes in the physical form of an organism, needs an enormous span of time. Developing from this concept of uniformitarianism, Darwin fashioned a singularly rational and definite argument for the origin of the varied organisms that inhabit the world. In his famous book, "On the Origin of Species", which was first published in 1859, Darwin proved the reality of organic evolution to scientists and non-scientists alike. Since then, geologic thought of time, that is the Huttonian concept has never been the same again. In fact, this concept proposed by Darwin metamorphosed all the other philosophical thought processes.

Eicher’s concept

Eicher beautifully summarized this concept in the year 1976. He said the populations of animals and plants yield offspring at such a rate that, if they were all able to survive, they would rise rapidly every year. Enormous progressive upsurge in population size does not occur. Though most populations vacillate year by year, they stay essentially fixed when observed over a long term. A very real tussle for survival exists in nature. For each individual to live and produce an offspring, they must contest for food and must handle effectively with every facet of the environment. This includes physical facets such climate extremes, as well as biological facets such as predatory attacks and diseases. Each individual varies from almost all others in its species. By the time Darwin came up with this theory, significant noticeable differences in domestic animals had already been obtained by selective breeding. This led Darwin to note that species in nature had comparable potential for undergoing modification.

Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection

It was here that Darwin offered something strikingly refreshing when compared to previous discussions on this subject. He theorized that instead of guessing that modifications are persuaded by the environment and are then passed to the progeny from generation to generation, he submitted that new features arise from within an organism completely by chance. In modern science, we know this as the concept of genetic mutation. Nevertheless, not all of these novel physiognomies will have adaptive importance or survival value, and some many may also be lethal. Some of the new features improve an individual’s success in handling with the environment and may also permit the organism to push past previous environmental blockades. Other evolved facets of characteristics will be unsuccessful, and individuals possessing these modifications will be unable to survive and thus unable to pass these on to the offspring. This process is what Darwin theorized as the Theory of Natural Selection.

Basis of evolution

Another important scientist that was contemporary with Darwin was Gregor Mendel. His work assumes significance because in the year 1965, he successfully demonstrated that organisms obtain traits through the process of "discrete units of heredity." These discrete units are now known as genes. It was much later that scientists in the 1930s presented that the ultimate source of variations was because of these genes. Any variation arising or observed in the offspring is due to a concept of genetic mutation. It can be logically argued mutation supports an organism to endure or duplicate more successfully, that mutation inclines to be conserved and spreads in a population through natural selection. Hence, evolution is based on both natural selection and genetic mutations. This means that mutations deliver plentiful genetic variations, and natural selection is able to sort out the necessary changes from the ones that get eliminated.
