Indoor Tanning Lotions – Everything you Need to Know

Developing a good, naturally bronzed tan from being outdoors can take months. This is the main argument for going to an indoor tanning bed – they enable you to get a decent tan after just a couple of sessions, so that you will already look good in your swimsuit when everybody else is just starting their tan. The best bang for your buck at the beds comes with using tanning lotion because the lotion will accelerate the effects of the machine’s rays on your skin.

To bronze or not to bronze

When most people think of bronzers, they think of that cheap spray on tan, turning your skin into something that is orange, opaque and fake. It turns out that a quality tanning lotion will contain bronzers that are nothing like what is used in spray on tans.

A quality immediate bronzer (i.e., one that coats the skin and washes off afterwards) will contain walnut shell extract, henna, and even caramel. This is quite the step away from the foundation like, powdery substances that rub into the skin which everyone tries to avoid. The next level up is a delayed bronzer. A quality delayed bronzer will contain sugar cane extracts that work by causing a natural chemical reaction on the skin’s surface that darkens the pigment.

Tan activated bronzers are the most sophisticated, technologically advanced bronzers out there. When applied, they introduce a dose of melanin that works its way into the bloodstream. When the skin is exposed to prolonged UV rays during tanning, the newly introduced melanin is immediately activated, and will appear in the skin’s pigment to induce a tan. The reason why this method works so well is because when people tan naturally, their skin cells produce melanin organically at a slow, gradual pace when they are exposed to the sun. Melanin is the biological compound that gives the skin that darkened, bronzed color. People from hot countries in regions like Africa and Latin America have naturally higher levels of melanin in their skin, which is why it is darker.

It’s all about the melanin

Things like sugar cane extract can mimic the effects of melanin, but its darkening effects on the pigment will only last a few days. When you notice a tan on your skin, what you are really noticing is higher levels of melanin in the skin’s pigment. The best tanning lotions are the ones that help the body to produce more melanin to promote the tan faster. Melanin production is also aided when the skin is moisturized. Coconut and hemp extracts are particularly good at this.

Whether you are someone who wants to preserve that golden skin tone all year round, or just want to get a jump start at the beginning of the season, melanin is the key ingredient to building a quality tan. Why waste time and money on products that try to act as a substitute for the real thing.
