There are many ways to create a positive learning space, some of which can be done online. There are a few key things that must be done to create a positive learning space for students during your online teaching.
- Check Your Own Attitude - First and foremost, check your own attitude about online teaching. If you have negative feelings associated with it then try not to let them influence the way you teach or interact with your students as this will help to establish a positive learning space online.
- Be Aware of the Distance - Remember that there is distance between you and your students, so it's important to give yourself some time for responses as well as think about how best to respond in order to keep them involved in their learning pedagogy. Use clear language and be sure not use any acronyms or phrases that your students may not understand.
- Be Punctual - If you have said something, then follow up with them to help avoid misunderstandings and further frustration on their part for being left in the dark about things. Use appropriate technology tools to communicate if needed as well so that everyone can remain informed at all times during their online learning.
- Check in Regularly - As a teacher, it's important to check in with your students regularly for their online learning and not only when you have something specific for them or there is a problem that needs addressing. Take some time out of each session to ask how things are going outside the classroom too so that they can feel more comfortable sharing anything with you.
- Keep Them Active - Another important thing to do is keep your students active and engaged so they don't get bored or distracted by their surroundings during their online learning. You can do this through the use of multi-media, assignments that require collaboration between them, activities that encourage creativity and involvement in each lesson.
- Be Flexible - Lastly, it is important to be flexible with your students and understanding of their needs in their learning pedagogy. Some students may have difficulty staying on task at times or learning the material so try not to become frustrated by this but rather be patient while waiting for them to catch up. Also ask questions that are open-ended in order to keep them thinking as well.
Follow the above suggestions and you should find that online teaching is just as effective as traditional face-to-face learning if not more so due to all of the tools available at your fingertips!
