Causes Of Typical AC Unit Water Leakages

Your air conditioning system keeps the inside of your home at an optimal temperature by drawing the warmth and extra humidity from the indoor air. While extracting the humidity from inside, your air conditioner develops water and condenses it within the system. This condensate is then removed using the piping in your building’s draining system.

Sometimes, due to several reasons, sludge formation or a malfunction may occur in your piping system. When that happens, the water can produce backflow in the drain lines of the system and can spill into your home. In other words, this leads to leaking of your aircon system. However, performing regular maintenance and inspections of your aircon can ensure optimum performance.

The article below discusses some of the common causes of air conditioner leaks.

Air Leak

It is one of the most common reasons for air conditioner leaks and dripping. For optimal function, the air reaching the aircon should go through vents; some faults can result in air leakage. As a result, the air is not reaching the vents as it should. This means the air reaching is not complete and is causing suboptimal performance.

To confirm whether the problem with your aircon is due to an air leak, perform the general troubleshooting of the system while examining the equipment for any air leak around the grates of the vents. If you find the leaks, you need to call your HVAC technician immediately and get the problem fixed to stop further leaks.

Blocked Filters

It is yet another common reason for air conditioner drips and leaks. When the air filter is blocked, it inhibits the proper airflow through it. This will lead to the freezing of air within the system. When you turn off the air conditioner or when the desired temperature is achieved, the frozen air starts melting. The water starts its way out in the form of aircon leaks.

Dirty Air Filters

When the air filters are clogged and dirty, the airflow to the evaporator is obstructed, thus leading to a decrease in temperature. When the coil becomes too cold, it freezes. When the air conditioner is turned off, the unit stops sucking in the warm air, which then leads to warming the unit resulting in the melting of accumulated ice. If the melting ice fills the capacity of the drip tray, your aircon will leak.

Broken Pump

There is a condensation pump located just below the cooling coil. The pump is responsible for removing the water thoroughly from the system to prevent leaks. When the condensation pump is broken or malfunctioning due to the accumulation of dirt and dust, the water starts dripping. An obvious sign that your condensation pump is not working properly and needs repairs or replacement.

Leaking Condenser Coil

The condenser unit of your air conditioner is looking outside your home, normally known as the outer. The unit comprises a condensation foil, a blower machine, and a compressor. As it is placed outside, there are greater chances of dirt and debris accumulation, resulting in blockage.

The leaking or blocked condensation coil is the most common cause of aircon leaks and a major cause of concern for homeowners in Canada.

Clogging Of The Drain Line

Another cause of your air conditioner dysfunctionality is clogging in the drain line. Main reason behind clogged drain lines is the overaccumulation of mold, debris, and other species. When these substances are in the drain line, it obstructs the regular outflow of water resulting in delayed water flow. This leads to overfilling in the in-water stock, causing spillage.

Poor Maintenance

Just like any other home appliance, your air conditioner needs proper maintenance. Make sure to clean the unit as many times as you can. Change and wash the air filter regularly to avoid any clogging and blockage. Seek professional help from an HVAC maintenance company when needed. Remember to check and inspect the evaporator coil and ensure it is not in the early stages of rusting. However, you need to perform the maintenance and inspection function regularly; aircon leakages may come to plague you more often.

Wrong Installation

If the air conditioner is not installed properly, it can be the main reason for water leaks. When you get your aircon installed, make sure that the front part of the outer is placed in a cooler place than its rear side. In this way, the water will drain properly, decreasing the chances of leaks.

The hidden and problematic causes of air conditioner leakages are mostly related to the wrong and improper installations. The improper inclination of your system obstructs the water flow. To avoid this, make sure to install your air conditioning system at a proper inclination angle. Improper inclinations can also result in complete failure of the air conditioner’s drainage system.
