If you’ve bought a new house or you’re moving into a new apartment to rent, you need to prepare for the day of the move. But with the exorbitant costs of hiring a moving company, for those of us looking to save, these rates are simply out of the question. So, what can you do to save when you move, whether in your state or out of state?

You can reduce the costs of moving and while this may involve a little bit more time and labor, it certainly helps to keep more in your pocket!

The Costs of Hiring Movers

Moving companies are hiking their costs especially if you decide to hire the services of large and established businesses. This has left more people to find smaller private companies to help with the move. The problem is that some small and new movers are taking advantage of clients by offering low prices and not delivering the goods or delaying the transport of personal belongings.

In 2021, the average cost to move can range from $350 to $1500. If you are planning a long distance move, you could be facing a bill of over $5000. You pay for the packing of goods, insurance cover, the hauling of valuables depending on the size of the truck, and the distance traveled including fuel costs.

To avoid paying over $1000 for your next move, let’s look at a few simple things you can do to ease the costs.

1. Save on Packaging

Moving starts with packing up your valuables in preparation for the day you will be vacating the property. Search online for boxes and crates that people are giving away or selling at a low price. You could also ask your local store if they have any cardboard boxes, you can use and that you’d be willing to take off their hands.

Along with boxes, bubble wrap is another important packing material. You can purchase 150 ft of clear bubble wrap at Walmart for around $17. Use bubble wrap for all furniture from tables and chairs to the refrigerator.

2. Get Friends and Family to Help You

Start a few weeks prior to the day of the move and get your friends and family to help you pack and move. They can assist with wrapping and boxing of goods along with transporting some manageable items to the new destination.

3. Hire a Truck

You can hire a truck for a day or longer to assist with the move. Contact a reliable rental company and get a few quotes for comparison to find the best deal.

4. Can You Move Out Early

If you are planning a move on your own, find out if you can move a day or two earlier. This way you can start transporting some of your belongings to the new location. If you are moving from a house to an apartment, you can also store or sell the items you no longer need which also puts some extra cash in your pocket.

5. Negotiate with Reputable Movers

If you need movers for large items or long moves, try to negotiate with them. They should be more than willing to work with you on providing a price you can afford.
