No matter how big or small your company is, if you're in the business in this digital era of information, it's important that you have an effective eLearning program. If yours is lacking, here are 5 essential steps for creating custom eLearning.

Custom eLearning is learning material that has been created for the sole purpose of meeting the aims and objectives of an organization. These courses are typically made to meet the business needs of a corporation instead of fulfilling any academic requirements, as is the case with traditional eLearning. Custom eLearning can include everything from initial employee training to improving employee skills, all the way to addressing individual job-specific skills that may need improvement.

In doing so, here are steps for adjusting and adding elements to corporate training in order to move you, the teacher, toward your corporate learning objective. Cognitive Load One surprising result of corporate training is the accelerated nature of the learning process. For some people, this natural proclivity towards learning may actually hinder the corporate learning experience.

Think about it. For many people outside a teaching context, life is pretty much a very static, pace-controlled environment wherein information is presented and the learning must be completed in a row. The corporate workplace is very dynamic and personalized; however, you must not only remain focused throughout this fluid environment, but you must also be ready to accept and accommodate the varying learning demands and characteristics of your employees within the corporate environment.

For teachers with integrity, their mission is not to please or accommodate their corporate stakeholders but is instead to help their students develop the skills and abilities to achieve their educational objectives. The basic concepts shared in elementary school science class are still useful in this realm; however, what most of us don't learn during this curriculum is that all things in nature have an innate order or rhythm, in addition to a natural tendency to return back to a state of its original cycles (no matter how far removed they may seem from our own).

Therefore, corporate learning environments should initially be considered cyclical and static in nature. From the outset, you should be setting expectations for teachers using the teacher's responsibility to bring kids back to basics by ensuring that there will always be a beginning, middle, and end to all corporate learning experiences (e.g., quarter break meetings, annual meetings, etc.). This in and of itself creates a natural learning curve, while allowing time for all teachers to focus on the high-level learning objectives for corporate students.

Competence Just as there is no one-size-fits-all training solution, there is no one-size-fits-everything teacher. You get too far ahead in your career before you know it. This dynamic can translate to the corporate setting. Your potential corporate learning objectives will depend on the competencies and skills you have accumulated on your own, as well as what you may have gained from working on behalf of your clients, their organizations, or the educational system at large. In any event, you must be positioning yourself as a knowledgeable corporate learner who is, in fact, competent in both the areas being taught and the skills required to do so.
