Manzil, a non-profit centre, took roots from the non-profit support group, ‘Special Families Support’ started by Dr Ayesha Husaini on 9 December 1999. The group is GCC’s oldest non-profit, focusing on persons with disabilities, and is supported by over 200 members. It evolved into Manzil on 7th February 2005. The centre’s staff is a construct of highly qualified educators with exceptional ideologies. The founder Director, Dr Ayesha Husaini has a PhD in Special Education and her thesis is based on inclusion in UAE. Her psychology degree and further studies in the field give her a sharp outlook on the deprivations and needs of individuals with disabilities in the country.

The centre is a haven for students with cognitive disabilities, fostering their growth and social inclusion in mainstream society. It caters to 42 students with a staff of 27, giving opportunities for the educators to provide support and attention to individual students. The teaching pedagogy and curriculum framework makes it a highly qualitative centre focused on maximum emotional and intellectual development. The centre’s focus is on establishing a professional learning environment where persons with disabilities can develop the necessary vocational and social skills essential for a life with the community at large.

Manzil’s core philosophy is inclusion not only at the educational stage but with the wider population in every stage of life. From living to working together, the centre works on instilling beliefs of oneness and acceptance of uniqueness. Manzil provides opportunities for their students to learn their skills in the mainstream environment which gives a new perspective to the general society as they are exposed to a different set of challenges faced by persons with disabilities. The concept of inclusion is absorbed easily at a young age when children are introduced to a positive mindset.

Manzil was the first and only organization certified as Disability Confident Committed outside the UK, in line with the UK Disability Confident Accreditation Scheme. The centre has also won two PHASE Awards- Outstanding Special Needs Supporter 2010 & 2015 (Zurich & Jumeirah Creekside Hotel) and the Outstanding Family of Special Needs Child 2010. In 2020, Manzil was also granted the United Nations Zero Project Award Winner, 2020 (Top 10 global initiatives).

The centre proves their constructivist approach to teaching and their principles with every success they acquire. Be it in the form of awards or weaving 85% of their graduates in mainstream society with jobs. Every student is integrated into society at a slow and steady pace. Their learning speed is acknowledged and respected, helping them flourish in an attentive space.
