Experts would tell you that buying olive oil (extra-virgin olive oil) is mostly a matter of personal choice. After a while, you'll notice several flavor profiles — such as piquant, peppery, mild, grassy, and hot — and which one you like. Some are only for cooking as cooking olive oil; they're milder and won't lose much taste when exposed to heat. Others are intended for sprinkling on top of finished foods; these are best served directly from the container. Many of the items on this list are suitable for both.

Dietary advice

When purchasing olive oil, consider extra virgin olive oil since it has undergone less processing and is more likely to maintain its antioxidant properties. Because extra virgin olive oil has a high smoke point of 376 °F (191 °C), it may be used in most culinary processes. The USDA grades olive oil based on its flavor, odor, defect-free status, and acidity.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) from the United States: This has a great flavor and aroma, as well as a free fatty acid level of 0.8 g or less per 100g (0.8 %).
  • U.S. Virgin Olive Oil: This oil has a pleasant flavor and aroma, as well as a free fatty acid level of 2g or less per 100g (less than 2 %).
  • Without further processing, virgin olive oil from the United States is unfit for human consumption: This is a virgin oil with a weak taste and odor. It is not designed for human consumption.
  • US Olive Oil: This is a blend of virgin and refined oils from the United States.
  • Refined Olive Oil from the United States: This is an oil manufactured from refined oils with some processing constraints.

These grades are entirely optional. Manufacturers are not required to label their items. Many nations, including the United States, use heat and chemicals to remove contaminants from "light" or "extra light" olive oils. When compared to virgin olive oils, the color and flavor are lighter. Light olive oil may be blended with other oils by producers.
