About RoHS Certification

The European Parliament approved two directives related to the reduction of electrical and electronic waste such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directives in the year 2002. The WEEE Directive aims to regulate the reuse, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment. The main objective is to prevent the disposal of the waste.

In the RoHS Directive, the use of the hazardous substances in most electrical and electronic equipment will be banned or severely restricted. The RoHS Directive calls for the elimination of these substances from most electronic equipment starting from 1st July 2006.

RoHS, also known as Lead-Free stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. RoHS Directives restrict the usage of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products in the EU market after July 1, 2006 must be in compliance with RoHS directives.

The Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations currently set limits for the substances as follows

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Cadmium
  • Hexavalent Chromium
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)

Maximum concentration of the above mentioned substances present in the product should be 0.1% except Cadmium which should maintain the concentration as 0.01%

Examples of product components containing restricted substances

The following are some examples of the components/products which contain hazardous substances

  • Pvc (vinyl) cables (e.g., power cords, usb cables)
