What's the best way to travel with a big family?
Posted: Dec 24, 2021
It's not much different to have a large family than a small one in many aspects of life, like getting your kids to school, driving Prince Pearl Price in Pakistan to activities, counseling them on how to navigate friendships, and helping them with homework. You just have to keep up with everything! If you're traveling with a big family- it definitely makes a difference! Here's what you can do!
How to Dine With Your Large Family While on Vacation
The purpose of a vacation is to take a break from the everyday routines we live by! While dining out on vacation is certainly a pleasure, it can get pretty pricey. We try to balance eating out at restaurants and fast food on the road with some home-cooked meals whenever possible.
A great tip to save some money on dining out is to eat lunch instead of dinner. We'll also pack snacks from home to eat during travel and to satisfy an overtired kid who's been dragged to too many attractions.
Get a Head Start
With so many people, it's hard to be unpredictable. When you go to a restaurant with 8 people at 7 pm, you can't expect them to seat you right away. When traveling with a large family, it makes sense to plan ahead in all areas of your trip- hotel reservations, campground reservations, tickets for attractions, dining reservations, etc. Have backup ideas for things to do in case your itinerary gets rained out.
Get a local guide
Consider the internet or a guidebook for self-guided walking tours if cost is a big concern. They're free (aside from any entrance fees) and you can skip the stuff you don't like and go where you want.
What to do when you're traveling with a lot of kids?
Booking a hotel room for just one kid isn't really legal once you have more than three. One night, maybe you'll sneak in a few of your kids through the side door.No one at the front desk will know how many people are in your room.
When I do that, I worry a hotel manager is going to knock on my door asking me to leave.
Whenever we have to stay in a hotel room for more than one night, we like to stay at Residence Inns and Springhill Suites because they have more room. Sadly, even these places don't allow 8 people in one room. We usually stay in a rented home or condo, so everyone has a bed for the week (even if 2 kids share).
It can actually be less expensive to rent a house or a condo for seven nights than staying in a hotel. While there's no daily maid service, you can bring food in and cook some meals, helping you save money. Often, when we visit our families in Michigan and in Florida, we stay with them and just bring sleeping bags and pillows.
Definitely worth checking out
It isn't our goal to have the picture-perfect vacation, nor is it possible. Whether it's getting lost for an hour, going on a canceled tour, or a reservation going sour, there's bound to be hiccups. Don't let bumps in the road faze you. Remember that you are creating life-long memories not just for you, but for your children as well.
