Understanding the Benefits of MBR Sewage Treatment Technology

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a technology for treatment of wastewater which treats wastewater through the combination of membranes and biological treatment. MBR sewage treatment plants are extensively used for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment. Supplied by MBR sewage treatment plant manufacturer supplier in India, such types of wastewater treatment plants can treat up to 50 million litres of wastewater on a daily basis. With the combination of membrane filtration and a suspended growth bioreactor, MBRs remove suspended and organic solids efficiently. Moreover, unlike the other conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems, MBRs don't utilize any settling tank or clarifier which makes solids separate from liquid and settle individually. Instead, membranes are utilized to fulfil this purpose which results in better quality of water.

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) systems provide a variety of operational and economic benefits when compared to traditional wastewater treatment plants. With MBRs there is no need for any type of secondary clarifiers or tertiary treatment. This in turn allows for enhanced performance along with a smaller footprint. This process also generates residue of good quality without generating any type of chemicals which are harmful for the environment.

The MBR treatment plants supplied by water treatment plant manufacturer suppliers in India are modular in their design and operation and permit construction or expansion of plants that can be completed over a period of time. Civil works can also be designed for excellent flow while membranes can be added in phases as the capacity of the plant operation dictates.

The MBR process utilizes membranes for the purpose of solid/liquid separation, which ensures that there is no need for the sludge to settle. However, this arrangement warrants the requirement for a polishing filter or secondary clarifier. Sludge is directly wasted from the aeration tank which is concentrated in the form of solid in the range of 0.8 – 1.0 % solids. The result is a system which is single in nature making it easier to operate.

The MBR wastewater treatment plant is operated at low organic loading rates, and the membrane allows for the arrangement barrier to discharge the particulate. The quality of the MBR effluent is not susceptible to organic or hydraulic surges which in turn does not affect effluent as is the case with the conventional wastewater plants.
