"Panettone" is a dessert that is traditional in Italy, on Christmas tables. You’ve probably already seen attractive boxes of different colors in the shops around the Christmas holidays, in which this delicious cake is hidden. In the shape of a dove, it is also seen on store shelves during Easter, but under the name "colomba".

It originates from the capital of fashion - Milan, where we will see beautifully wrapped gifts with a delicious "panettone" while looking at the festive displays of bakeries and confectioneries. It will not be strange if you get the right panettone from an Italian as a gift, because it is also part of their tradition.

Actually, the word panettone means "big" or "strong" bread, because of the citrus peel and raisins, according to the trade commission. The double rising of natural yeasts insures panettone's long shelf-life - and the reason you can enjoy a "fresh" cake made months ago in Italy and shipped to this country.

How did Panettone come into being?

Although sweet bread was known in Roman times, the history of "panettone" dates back to the Renaissance. With a shortage of wheat, bread from it was baked only for Christmas, and each family member was given a piece, the rest was saved for the New Year. In this way, they symbolically expressed the "continuation" or continuity of life. A cross was carved on the bread, which can also be seen on the popular "panettone" cake.

Panettone and Italian romance

Of course, we can’t miss the Italian romance and legend of a Milanese baker named Toni, that fell in love with a woman who walked past his bakery every day. In order to lure her to the bakery, he spent months developing a recipe for a special bread or cake with the aroma of vanilla and named it "Pan di Toni", which means Toni's bread.

Complex preparation of sweet panettone cake

In Zemono preparing a real "panettone" will take us more than two days and it is quite complicated. The texture of "panettone" reminds us of bread, but it is moist like a cake and melts in your mouth. If we tear off a piece by hand, we will have the same feeling as if we were pulling sugar foam.
