It's natural to feel depressed or irritable at times. Exams, disputes with family or friends, changing schools, or moving house can cause sadness and anxiety in young people. Sadness might last for weeks or months, interfering with day-to-day activities. If a young person is unhappy most of the time and struggles to stay motivated, they might be suffering from depression, a severe condition that affects individuals of all ages. Depression should be addressed seriously since suicide is a major cause of mortality among young people.

Teen depression is a significant mental health issue that results in a continuous sense of melancholy and a lack of interest in activities. It has an impact on how your adolescent thinks, feels, and acts, and it can lead to emotional, functional, and physical issues. Although depression may strike at any age, teenagers and adults may experience distinct symptoms.

Symptoms of depression - Young individuals are prone to mood swings, can become angry at times, and are especially sensitive to rejection and criticism. However, if the young person's emotions have persisted for two weeks or more, he or she may be depressed. Signs and symptoms of teen depression include a shift in the teen's attitude and conduct, which can result in considerable discomfort and issues at school, at home, in social activities, and in other aspects of life.

Causes of depression in young people

  • Depression is a mental disease that is one of the most frequent

mental health issues among teenagers. Anxiety and sadness in young people can be caused by a variety of variables and life circumstances. There is no single factor that will cause depression to develop; genes and family tendencies can influence whether someone is more likely to develop depression, but there are many other factors that can act as potential triggers for depression, one of which is the pressures of modern life on young people.

  • Young people in today's culture are bombarded with information that puts pressure on them to satisfy needs that are frequently unattainable. They are bombarded with pictures of how they should appear, what they should have, and how they should act, all based on the notion that this is essential in life.

  • Depressive symptoms might be triggered by stressful relationships. A poor, stressful, or unpleasant home environment can impact a young person's self-esteem and contribute to depression. Insecurity, shame, anger, rejection, or a sense of loss can arise as a result of family conflict, divorce, or separation that results in a change in living circumstances. Difficulties in establishing and keeping friendships or relationships can lead to poor self-esteem and confidence, making it more difficult for the young person to find someone with whom they can express their concerns.
