Capillary columns are gas chromatography columns that are not packed into the cavity and their stationary phase coating their inner surface. Most capillary columns are used in the petroleum and pharmaceutical industries. They help to test for impurities and determine the chemical makeup in clinical laboratories. In comparison to the packed column, a capillary GC column has a more efficient separation of the sample. By introducing too much of the sample it is easily overloaded. One of the main differences in the capillary column is the stationary phase and how polar it is and other differences are types of capillary GC columns, their size, or whether they have an end cap or not. The two main chromatographic columns are the packed column and capillary column.

GC Capillary Columns

Capillary columns require small amounts of samples for the chromatography process and these columns are preferred over the packed variants. The size of the column comes with a diameter measuring.

The capillary columns are further divided into two parts:

  • WCOT:

WCOT stands for Wall-Coated Open Tubular columns. The liquid stationary phase is coated inside its walls.

  • SCOT

SCOT stands for Support-Coated Open Tubular columns which don't include a direct coating of stationary phase on the walls. The support material known as diatomaceous earth is lined on the walls of the column. This material absorbs the stationary phase.

The efficiency of SCOT material decreases as compared to the WCOT type of capillary columns. But they are more kind in comparison to the packed column GC.

The columns also provide higher resolution but they are a little expensive. But their benefits make the price worth it and capillary columns maintain a low pressure inside them.

How to Choose GC column

The selection of GC columns can be a little confusing so choose them according to the points mentioned below:

  • Sample size

As Detectors have high sensitivities so there is no need for large sample injections. Capillary Column is the best choice in that case. But if the detector sensitivity is low then packed columns are considered.

  • Cost

Capillary Columns have lower resolution efficiencies and larger column bleed.

  • Resolution Power

If we lead to the desired separation between closely spaced peaks then capillary columns provide better resolution.

  • Ruggedness

Capillary Columns require careful handing while installing and removing inside the column oven and the column are fragile.

  • What is Gas Chromatography?

The technique of separating components in a mixture by the difference in partitioning behaviors between mobile and stationary phases is known as Chromatography. One of the most popular techniques to separate volatile compounds and substances. Gas Chromatograph has become one of the most important tools because of its simplicity, high sensitivity, and ability to effectively separate mixtures.

The two-phase are stationary phase and mobile phase and components in the mixture are distributed between these two phases. As the compounds pass through the compounds in the mobile phase interact with the stationary phase. The properties and structure of each component are different so the size and affinity of each interaction are different from the stationary phase.

Advantage of Gas Chromatography

  • The separation efficiency and analysis speed are high. It takes 20 minutes to complete a general sample analysis.
  • Detection sensitivity is high and sample consumption is small.
  • Gas Chromatography has really good selectivity and is used to analyze mixtures and samples with close boiling points.
  • Wide range of applications and is used to analyze gases and volatile organic substances. High boiling point substance and solid samples are also used to analyze.

Conclusion

So if you want to install the Capillary column and Gas chromatograph then quadrexcorp is the best option for you. It is important to get aware of each capillary and chromatography.
