Why is the Affordable Housing Waiting List So Long?

Affordable housing in the US has become a highly criticized topic over the last few years as the number of people in need of low cost housing continues to rise while housing availability declines. In a bid to address the issue, the government has promised to invest in more housing developments and funding to assist those in need. Unfortunately, for those who need affordability and a roof over their heads today, the housing promises of tomorrow don’t provide much comfort or reassurance.

When you apply for public housing or Section 8, your application goes into a queue for review by HUD or a similar housing agent. Once accepted or approved, only then are you placed on the list for an apartment to rent. Sadly, these lists are extremely long with the largest public housing lists holding a waiting period of 7 years! If you need a home based on low income in the next few months, you certainly can’t wait that long for housing. Your best bet is to speak directly to the HUD. Their role is to assist everyone with fair housing in the US.

The reason the waiting list is long is that the housing demand exceeds the supply. There are millions applying for housing but simply not enough properties available to keep up with the demand. There are also developments believed to be underway; however, these properties won’t be available for a very long time. To assist people with options for housing, it’s important to understand that there are more rentals available than merely public or housing voucher programs.

You can find other types of accommodation such as micro-apartments in one or two bedrooms that offer tiny square footage but at a more economical monthly rent. You can also consider a mobile home or if you have enough saved up, a manufactured home on an approved site. Federal loans are also available for those who earn a low income but want to buy property.

So How Can You Save to Make Life More Affordable?

Affordability is about working with your finances. It is about trying to rethink your expenditures and to try to make your income stretch as much as possible. This includes finding rent that you can afford even if it means that you don’t get approved for public housing or Section 8 housing voucher programs.

The little things you can consider to save money range from sacrificing costs on entertainment and clothing to finding ways to save on your annual tax.

The Affordable Housing Reality

Finding housing that you can afford and trust can be a challenge in today’s times. Research and some time can help you with cost effective renting and reduce the possibility of breaking a lease during your tenancy because of financial issues.

You can find a home that you can afford so don't give up because the public housing or Section 8 programs are long or not accepting new applicants. There are alternatives, you just need to know where to find them.
