Low Carb Mixed Drinks
Posted: Jan 28, 2022
Low carb mixed drinks are a great way to get your buzz on without doing yourself any damage, but very few people know which of their favorite cocktails work with the Keto Diet.
Here, we'll focus specifically on vodka mixed drinks and how to make them low carb.
Alcohol has gotten a bad rap from the medical community over the years but the truth is that it's not nearly as dangerous or detrimental to your health as most people think it is. Even so, there are some scientists out there who insist upon preaching about all of the evils associated with drinking whenever they can get in front of a microphone. The stickiest point for alcohol seems to be carbohydrates, which add empty calories and cause greater intoxication when consumed in amounts. In fact, many researchers cite the high carbohydrate content in our alcoholic beverages as one of the leading causes of obesity in America.
Now carbohydrates are by no means bad, but when you're on Atkins (or any low carb diet) they can act like poison to your body. It's important to note that all vodkas are carb-free, with the only potential drawback being an elevated alcohol content which will induce more rapid intoxication. That said, here is a list of some popular vodka drinks and their respective calorie counts:
- Grey Goose Vodka Tonic 176 calories
- Absolut Vodka Martini 164 calories
- Skyy Infusions Citrus Flavored Vodka 154 calories
- Smirnoff Vodka Mojito 154 calories
- Stolichnaya Vodka Tonic 150 calories
- Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka 140 calories
- Skyy Infusions Raspberry Flavored Vodka 136 calories
- Smirnoff Twisted Vodka Cranberry 100 Calories
Remember, all vodkas are carb-free (or very close to it), so the only real difference between these drinks is how much you're paying for them. Though some of them may look like your favorite mixed drink, don't be fooled into thinking that they taste the same or that they'll get you just as drunk. Some low-end vodka brands sell their product at an astonishingly low price, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're of higher quality.
Your best bet for low-carb mixed drinks is to buy the highest quality vodka you can afford and use your favorite mixer to give it flavor. If you want the taste, but not the buzz then try using diet soda or sparkling water as a mixer instead. You could also try unflavored rum or tequila if you really wanted to mix cocktails without mixing in carbohydrates.
As with pretty much everything else on the Keto Diet, moderation is key.
