Curbing pollution involves adequate planning and making streamlined efforts. Much of the onus lies upon individuals and organizations to undertake activities that will take the world closer to a greener tomorrow. Here are some green deeds that can be undertaken to curb pollution:

Installation of Green Roof

Green roof is one of the modern and interesting phenomenons that involves having one’s own roof top garden or a site of vegetation on the terrace. Green roof reduces the temperature of the surrounding air and of the surface at the roof. Heat is removed from the air by way of evapo-transpiration. In comparison to a conventional terrace, a green roof will have much lower temperature than that of the surrounding air during summers. Green roofs also improve the quality of air for humans to breathe as they help in the removal of greenhouse gases from the air. Oxygen rich air released by the plants maintains the quality of air, evangelists carbon sequestration and reduces dry deposition. Green roofs also filter the impurities of rainwater and reduce the water runoff that is hugely prevalent in urban areas.

Effective Waste Management

One should be careful in handling waste like dry leaves, animal waste, debris etc. They should not be allowed to drift into drains and gutters of the city. Most of the drains of the cities open into lakes, rivers and streams and such debris can contribute to the contamination of natural water reservoirs.

Chemical Waste Collection Events and Reduced use of Chemicals

Being responsible with household chemical wastes like paints, oil, grease, brake oil, engine oil, etc. is essential. These fluids should not be let out on roads or gutters as they eventually find their way to nearby lakes and streams. The greasy, oily nature of these substances forms a film over the water bodies they percolate into. Such water contamination can be life threatening for organisms and living beings that inhabit these water bodies. Therefore, there should be regular events like Chemical Waste Collection where the society can have a structured and methodical way of disposing off the chemical waste in a bid to save the environment. Alternatively, one should be conscious with the use of chemicals. Each individual should exercise caution while purchasing detergents and should opt for detergent variants that have low quantity of phosphorous. Phosphorous is harmful and detergent water that is let out into lakes and gutters through drainage system of urban areas contaminate water reservoirs and other natural resources. The use of chemicals should be monitored and one should refrain from using chemicals as much as possible.

Increasing the Green Cover of a city

The greenery of the city can be enhanced by focussing on ways to increase the green cover through tree plantation and creation of open spaces. Building and maintaining parks can go a long way in providing a healthier environment for the people to live. Parks that abound in trees and natural vegetation will clear the air of greenhouse gases and mitigate the harmful effects of pollution. Infrastructure and real estate developers should ensure that there are parks and gardens included in their construction plans.

Organic Farming

Organic farming opposes the use of pesticides and chemicals while farming. This keeps the fertility of the soil intact and also saves water from being polluted as pesticides are not washed away by rainwater into nearby natural water bodies. Ingersoll Rand, advocates various Green initiatives across all its facilities. It encourages its employees and stakeholders to undertake Green initiatives in order to curb and control pollution so that the world is a healthier place to live.

It is essential to be conscious of the environment, opt for a greener lifestyle and contribute towards a healthier tomorrow.
