Posted: Feb 07, 2022
If you are trying to create a floating ceiling, your approach to the job will depend on whether you are working in a single story building, with no rooms above the ceiling on which you are working, or any room upstairs.
If you are working on a ceiling with a room above it, you may consider creating floating ceiling systems with the use of strong bars.
A floating ceiling
By utilizing strong bars in floating ceiling systems, you will be actually constructing a new ceiling board of plaster board under in place of the current one. The strong bars and the plaster board should be utilized with some other sound deadening material such as acoustic mineral wool, acoustic membrane or soundproofing mats.
You can remove the present ceiling and fill up the open space with acoustic soundproofing services, and attach strong bars so that they are perpendicular to the joists of the old ceiling. Put one layer of plaster board against the bars, fasten it with the screws, and layer it with the surrounding mats or membrane. Then attach the second layer of the plasterboard.
To seal your floating walls and ceiling, you will have to ensure that a 5mm gap stays between the adjoining walls and the plasterboard, and seal the gap with acoustic sealant so that it becomes airtight, and the soundproof ceiling keeps floating.
Dropped soundproof ceiling
If you have decided to just drop your soundproof ceiling from the current one, attach battens perpendicular to the joists of the ceiling, fill up the gaps between the battens with acoustic mineral wool, and then replicate the process for the floating ceilings.
Either of these methods for constructing a soundproof ceiling should efficiently deaden the sounds of the footsteps upstairs, but if they need more work than you want to undertake, you have the choice of hiring acoustic soundproofing services, or spraying the ceiling with acoustic foam. They will deaden the sounds from above to a considerable degree, though not as much as newly installed soundproof ceiling.
One of the hardest things about installing a soundproof ceiling is that you will frequently have to work below on scaffolding. It is not just inconvenient; it is surely not the best way to ensure everything is safely attached. You can eradicate this issue if you make your soundproof ceiling by working on the floor in the room upstairs.
By putting the soundproof material on the upper floor, you will deaden the sounds upstairs before the travel to the ceiling of the room below. This method for creating a soundproof ceiling is specifically efficient in multi-storied office buildings and apartment.
If you are using half in drywall to complete the wall, you will have to nail a half inch by one and half inch filler to the base plate so that it will be flash with the framed wall.
