Different Stages of Team Development in an Organisation

It takes days to build a great team and it can’t be done overnight. It requires a lot of energy, patience, hard work, time and strong leadership. As a leader, you should be aware about the development stage your team is working now.

Every team in an organisation have to go through various development stages. These stages are as follows:

Forming Stage:

In this stage, an individual get the status of a team member and leader’s abilities are also tested. This stage may last for a few weeks or a month. Employees start to get to know each other by making new friends and sharing some personal information. Following things can be done by team members and leaders.

Storming:

  • The leader should explain the various stages of team development to the whole team

Norming:

In this stage, the members accept their team, procedures and rules, their roles in the project, also the individuality of other members. The following things are seen in this stage.

  • Team members become more confident and independent
  • Develop loyalty
  • Help and support other members
  • Maintain high energy
  • Learn new job skills
  • Leaders can support team spirit
  • Leaders can help to develop problem-solving skills and
  • They can also help the team to take full responsibility to achieve the desired goals

Performing:

In this stage, the team starts to perform. By working together, members increase their capabilities through conflicts, solving problems, resolving differences and achieving goals. During this stage, pride and satisfaction become the key emotions. Following things should be done by team members and leaders.

  • Should help each other
  • Co-operate with other in the group
  • Be proud of work and accomplishments done
  • Try to develop a close attachment with other team members

Adjourning:

This is the last stage in which the team breaks-up after the completion of the whole task or project. The team leader should ensure to provide the right feedback on the goals that have been achieved by the team.
