In the US, the government has created funding to help vulnerable communities or individuals and households with a variety of challenges. This includes programs aimed at improving housing, assisting students with college tuition, and upgrading homes for those with disabilities.

If you are interested to learn how you can benefit from government programs and grants, we look at the types of funding available and the ways you can get relief.

Government Assistance

Before you can determine which program to pursue, you need to know where government dedicates funds and which of these are most applicable to your situation.

Buying a House

Federal loans are available to those who cannot afford a home loan or mortgage through a conventional lender such as a bank because of a low income. You can access assistance for down payments for a house when you contact your state down payment support program.

Paying Utilities

If you need help managing the costs for heating and air conditioning, then the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is available. Only if you have a low income will you be considered for funding to pay your home energy bills.

College Funding

Students who need assistance with their college funds can apply for grants such as the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and the Pell Grant. To qualify, you must meet the criteria for financial assistance, enrolment status, and what the course fees are.

You can also contact Federal Student Aid to find the necessary application forms and apply to the program that is most suited to your needs.

Health Benefits

You can pursue tax credits on your medical insurance premiums from the Affordable Care Act when you purchase a government-issued medical plan. These credits are usually paid directly to the insurer with the added benefit of lowering your monthly premiums.

Finding Housing Assistance

When you are looking for housing assistance in the US, you can reach out to local housing communities, charitable organizations, and federal government programs such as the HUD. Programs such as Section 8 or the Housing Voucher Program and Public Housing are available for those who qualify but the waiting lists are more than a year long. You will also have to meet the necessary qualifying income limits to be considered for the waiting list.

Alternatives include affordable housing from second chance apartments to apartments with small square footage or shared accommodation.

There are many social programs and grants available from the government, but the application process is strict and can be quite lengthy. Be patient, ensure you have all the information requested, and stay on top of the progress of your application.

If the above-mentioned grants aren't suited to your situation, you can research which other types of programs are available and the ways that you can apply for them.
