Are Unusual Engagement Ring Designers Rejecting Diamonds?
Posted: Nov 11, 2014
During the early 1900s a diamond engagement ring was much less sought after than it is now. Diamonds were just one option of many, with many people opting for unusual engagement ring designers instead. If diamonds were chosen, people would usually get smaller, inexpensive versions as opposed to the large, bank-breaking purchases that are made today. It wasn’t until the 1940s, due to a huge advertising campaign, that diamonds began to be recognised as an object of social status and symbol of the ultimate betrothal.
As diamonds became the norm for engagement rings, the personal connotations once associated with them became diluted to many people. They are still hugely popular, with many women deciding from childhood that nothing but a diamond will do. However, other women are beginning to prefer the less common options (such as coloured stones), and many are consulting unusual engagement ring designers in order to create something truly unique to them. If your partner has decided against diamonds, here are a few ideas of things you could consider.
Gemstones
Many birthstones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies are seen as equally as glamorous; the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne and Princess Diana all famously received sapphires when they became engaged. Unusual engagement ring designers could easily incorporate a gem personal to your partner, such as their birthstone. For many, the stone in the ring is only as important as its symbolism, and gemstones are perfect for this as each one has a different personal sentiment attached to it.
Knot Ring
On the rise in popularity is the knot wedding ring, which includes no stone at all but is made up of a knot fashioned from the band of the ring itself. This is perfect for lower budget purchases, but also for those who dislike stone rings and want something different. The knot is also symbolic of the ‘tying the knot’ phrase, which appeals to those who appreciate symbolic gestures.
Vintage
If your partner is someone who likes to keep up with modern trends, a vintage ring could be what they’re looking for. Vintage has recently come back in a big way and is highly recognisable and often designed to look unusual. Engagement ring designers everywhere are indulging in the vintage trend, whether it is authentic vintage or a modern imitation. Stones such as pearls and gemstones that were extremely popular in the Victorian Era are making a comeback in a huge way, and this could be exactly what your partner is looking for if a diamond ring doesn’t appeal to them.
