Petroleum Products
Posted: Mar 24, 2022
BPCL has two primary refineries in India; one is in Mumbai, and the second is in Kochi. The Kochi refinery was initially established as a joint venture collaborating with Phillips Petroleum Corporation, USA. And now it is renamed Kochi Refineries Limited; the oil refining capacity in Kochi is 15.5million metric tonnes per annum. The list of the Kochi refinery Petroleum products are;
Liquified Petroleum Gas
Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is used in cylinders for agricultural, recreation, hospitality, industrial, construction, sailing, and fishing sectors. The cylinders are also used for cooking, central heating, and water heating.
According to the study, from April to September 2016, India had consumed 8.9 million tonnes of LPG. There are 215 million LPG domestic connections (single connection for six people), and more than 350 million LPG cylinders are circulated.
The LPG contains a mixture of flammable hydrocarbon gasses like propane, butane, and propylene.
Naphtha
It is also an explosive liquid hydrocarbon mixture. These mixtures are produced from natural gas condensates, petroleum distillates, coal, tar, and peat distillation. Naphtha is also a crude oil that can transform into kerosene in different industries.
Naptha can be used to produce plastic and fuel for commercial usage, the fuel used for camping stoves and oil lanterns, and in cigarette lighters. It is also known as white gas because its low boiling point makes it easy to catch fire.
It is also helpful in diluting heavy crude oil, and naphtha is an efficient dilutant, and it can be recycled from the processing and transport of diluted crude oil.
Petrol
Petrol is a highly flammable liquid that is used in vehicles. It is a mixture of a large number of various hydrocarbons. The typical gasoline consists of similar small mixtures, light hydrocarbons with four and twelve carbon atoms per molecule.
The petrol uses a mixture of paraffin (alkanes), olefins (alkenes), and cycloalkanes (naphthenes). Every oil refinery doesn't have the same set of processing units. If the petrol is stored correctly, it can be stable for six months.
Diesel
Diesel is also used in vehicles, and it is made explicitly for the use of diesel engines. The diesel is used for specific fractional distillation of petroleum fuel oil, and the alternatives not derived from petroleum are biodiesel, biomass to liquid. Gas to liquid diesel is being developed and adopted.
The types of diesel products produced in the Kochi refinery are petroleum diesel, synthetic diesel, biodiesel, hydrogenated oils and fats, and Dimethyl ether (DME).
Kerosene
Kerosene is a clear liquid formed by hydrocarbons, and it has a low viscosity. Kerosene is applied as a fuel for heating oil. Kerosene is widely used in Japan and Chile as a home heating fuel. In India, Kerosene is used as a primary fuel for cooking.
Earlier, kerosene was also used as Tractor Vaporizing Oil (TVO). Kerosene is primarily used in the entertainment industry for fire performances. Kerosene is not recommended for indoor activities as it produces an unpleasant odor, which becomes poisonous in sufficient concentration.
