Diwali is one of the most popular festivals of India, which is celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy. This festival is celebrated by people of almost all religions. Many days before the arrival of this festival, the cleaning and decoration around the houses starts. New clothes are made to wear on these days, sweets are made. Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on this day, so the houses are cleaned and decorated for her arrival and welcome. It is believed that on this day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana and after spending fourteen years of his exile. In the joy of the arrival of Lord Shri Ram, all the people of Ayodhya had lit diyas. The entire city was cleaned and decorated with lamps.

Govardhan is worshiped on the fourth day of Deepawali, because on this day Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain on one of his fingers to save people from the torrential rain caused by Indra's anger. The fifth day of Diwali or the last day of the festival is celebrated as Bhai Dooj. On this day sister applies tilak to her brother.
