Sticky floors can’t be termed anything less than repulsive. No one finds the sticky floors clean and worthy of being used. As a business, sticky floors can be the sole reason for your customer and guest divergence. In short, they are a big turn-off for most people. The best way to avoid such a sticky and disgusting situation is by acting timely and following the correct cleaning method.

In general, sticky floors are caused by three main reasons;

  1. Floors can get sticky if some sugary liquid is spilt over them.

  2. Accumulation of a stubborn combination of grease, debris, moisture, dust, and other contaminants left on the floor for too long can also lead to a sticky floor area.

  3. Lastly, incorrect and incompatible use of cleaning products may also cause this problem.

The following article provides some easy and helpful tips to clean sticky floors effectively.

Top Ways To Clean Sticky Floors

Cleaning methods that can prove effective in getting rid of sticky floors depend on the reason behind stickiness. Hence, you need to find the root cause of a problem before fixing it.

Stickiness due to a recent spill

If the stickiness is due to a recent spill of juice, liquid, or other sweet substance, the best remedy is to wipe it away with a paper towel or a rag. When liquids spill on the floor, it is crucial to wipe them away as soon as possible so they don’t get time to seep in the floors and cause stickiness.

As an initial step, clean liquid stains using shop towels, rags, paper towels, or anything disposable and end it with mopping the floor with freshly rinsed and cleaned mop.

Stickiness Due To Moisture And Dirt:

If the stickiness is due to the accumulation of dirt and moisture on the floor, start cleaning using a warm soaked mop. Let the mop or rags soak in warm water and later wring them thoroughly until they are only slightly wet. Place the warm mop or rag on the floor and let the warm water stay on the floor for some time. The warm water will help loosen the residue and make cleaning easier.

Next, using the wet mop, clean the floor using a good quality liquid soap or any floor cleaner. Wipe the floor with a liberal amount of soap and go over the sticky patch as many times as needed. Continue the process until the whole floor is clean and no stickiness is left behind. However, make sure to change the soap and water solution when it becomes so murky that you can’t see the bottom of the bucket.

After cleaning the floor with the cleaning solution, it is time to adequately remove the cleaning solution itself from the floor. Mop the floor with clean water till every ounce of the solution is gone from the floor. For the last step, make sure to remove excess moisture from the floor using a towel, rag, or a dry mop. Excessive moisture exposure can damage the structure of your floor.

After cleaning the floor, make sure to thoroughly wash the mop to get rid of any cleaning solution, dust, and stickiness from it. This will ensure that the mop is in a usable condition for the next cleaning session.

Some of the ways to keep your industrial or commercial building floor from getting sticky are;

Wipe spill promptly: clean any type of spill as swiftly as possible. The longer the spill stays on the floor, the more difficult it becomes to clean.

Don’t use detergents: detergents are made for washing purposes and are specific to their job. Therefore, it is advised to not use detergents to clean the floor. They just make the floor slippery, increasing the chances of workplace injuries due to slips and falls.

Use correct cleaning products: the best way to keep the flooring healthy and last longer in the industrial setting is by using the correct industrial cleaning products. That is, use the solutions that are meant for a floor on the floor and those for washing PPE kits to wash the kits.

Use the correct cleaning solution: when using the cleaning soap and water solution, make sure that it is diluted in the correct ratio. The excessive amount of cleaner used is the most common culprit in the post-cleaning stickiness of the floor. Therefore, make sure that you use the correct procedure and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions written on the user manual.

Dry the floors properly: the final step of cleaning, i.e. the drying of the floor is important. Firstly, it makes sure that the moisture does not seep deeper into the flooring and damage it. Secondly, it is also the best way to ensure that no residue is left on the floor that can attract dust, dirt, and other contaminants that cause stubborn sticky patches.

Provide a layer of floor protection: next up is the preventive measure. Protect your floor from tracked-in dirt by placing a high-quality commercial floor mat. Good floor mats will be able to trap the dust, dirt, debris, and other contaminants.

In conclusion, sticky floors are always a pain to clean. However, by cleaning them on a timely basis and using the proper technique, the problem can be solved before it worsens.
